SanDisk unveils Sansa Fuze+ MP3 player; starts at $79

Summary: Getting in the door just before Apple’s big “music-related” announcement tomorrow, SanDisk is trying to beat them to the punch with the debut of the Sansa Fuze+ MP3 player.

Getting in the door just before Apple’s big “music-related” announcement tomorrow, SanDisk is trying to beat them to the punch with the debut of the Sansa Fuze+ MP3 player.

The latest portable media player from SanDisk hosts a 2.4-inch color QVGA LCD touchscreen, a microSDHC card slot (up to 16GB), and a spot for SanDisk’s own slotRadio cards. The Sansa Fuse+ is also very versitile when it comes to compatibility, with support for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems as well as preloaded synchronization with Rhapsody and Napster, among other programs.

As for multimedia playback, here’s the supported codec list:

  • Audio: MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC/M4A, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Audible, Secure WMA, Podcasts
  • Video: H.264, MPEG-4, WMV, Flip Video
  • Photos: JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, PNG

When it comes to battery life, users can expect up to 24 hours of audio playback or up to five hours of video playback. Not that impressive, but it gets the job done.

Available in five shades (red, white, black, blue and purple), this is a good option for younger consumers, especially given the prices. The Sansa Fuse+ is selling now in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities for $79, $89 and $119 respectively.

Not sure about that sentence. Sounds like a good option for all consumers, especially younger ones. I have one of the 8GB Sansa Fuse and am very pleased with it's performance and price. When it needs replacing, I'll stick with Sansa's newest model (provided it is rated decently by consumer groups). I'm not sure I'll like the touchscreen feature though I suppose it won't matter as long as it works while wearing a protective cover.

Why are the batteries not rechargable, seems like decent times to me, as good as anything Apple has. I like the specs because it does what I want, plays mp3s without an inflated cost for a picture of a fruit. I will have to find a local source and check it out because you don't say what the audio quality is like, and how is it connected to a PC, USB or via the removable card. Your article wanted this device to sound drab compared to Apples newest ripoff announcement tomorrow which I am sure you will gush over. Its funny when I first started coming to ZDNet the focus was on PC's period, not focussed on Apple products and so-so reviews of everything else.

  • Not a review
@Rndmacts I've never seen a review from Rachel. She just receives a product announcement from a manufacturer and pastes some of the text into her blog. She makes no attempt to learn anything about the product beyond the manufacturer's publicity release.

Her spelling is poor - "The Sansa Fuse+ is also very versitile (SIC) when it comes to compatibility" and the error comes from carelessly paraphrasing the original PR.

Oh well, someone has to get paid for it...

...further reading reveals that it will accommodate 32gb SDHC, just that the player may not be able to address more than 40gb in total.

My family & I have several of the Sansa products - a couple of Fuze's and several Sansa clips. The sound quality is as good or better than my 5th gen iPod Nano and 4th gen iPod classic. The clip is great for exercising - small, light and it has a screen! I am looking forward to checking out the Fuze +.
