SaskTel CEO: New iPhone coming this June

By | April 16, 2010, 2:09am PDT

Summary: Now that most of the iPad madness has died down (with the exceptions of some new bugs popping up here and there), it’s obviously time to go back to discussing rumors about the next generation of the iPhone. The latest big discussion has stemmed from Robert Watson, CEO of Canadian wireless provider SaskTel, who recently stated that a new version of the Apple smartphone will be available on their service this summer.

Now that most of the iPad madness has died down (with the exceptions of some new bugs popping up here and there), it’s obviously time to go back to discussing rumors about the next generation of the iPhone.

The latest big discussion has stemmed from Robert Watson, CEO of Canadian wireless provider SaskTel, who recently stated that a new version of the Apple smartphone will be available on their service this summer.

According to Apple Insider, SaskTel currently operates on a CDMA 3G network, but it switching to GSM, which should be ready by July 1 in time for a release. Many possible iPhone announcement dates are also swirling, with most people now pointing towards June 22. The actual U.S. release probably wouldn’t be long after that.

The name of this new iPhone has also become a popular topic, varying between “iPhone 4G” and potentially “iPhone HD,” given that the new model will have a better, higher-res screen. It’s highly likely that Apple will release a fourth-gen iPhone this summer (and most definitely by the end of the year), but also as well as on two different carriers in the U.S, which should prove to be a much different but more interesting situation to observe.

One of the biggest upgrades I’m hoping for is a better built-in camera, with a higher megapixel count and a flash. These two features are available on so many other smartphones with cameras these days, so there’s no excuse for Apple not to better the integrated camera to some extent. What would you like to see on a new iPhone?

SaskTel Confirm Some Details
Hellomoto900 10th Jul 2010
The iPhone still hasn't been confirmed in Saskatchewan yet. But a few days ago SaskTel confirmed its 3G+ Network will be launched in early August. They say that they are currently "in conversation with apple" and that the phone should arrive soon.

Another thing is that, dogontribe's comment is a little incorrect. The iPhone 4 runs on 3G and 4G on providers like Sprint. In my opinion I think iPhone 4 will run better on 3G+ because it has been around for longer, and has more bugs fixed.

iPhone 4G ?
mKind 16th Apr 2010
I thought the 'G' always represented the 'G' in wireless standards.ie; when we say iPhone 3G, that means it is a phone that supports 3G cellular wireless standards.

So now, does 4G mean its going to support 4G wireless standards ? I doubt it. I don't think the US carriers have upgraded their infrastructure to support 4G. (I may be wrong though)

If that is not the case, then the iPhone 4G may be the 4th generation iPhone that support 3G wireless standards ! thats be confusing for at least some of the customers.

As per Wikipedia :-

The 4G working group[clarification needed] has defined the following as objectives of the 4G wireless communication standard:

* Flexible channel bandwidth, between 5 and 20 MHz, optionally up to 40 MHz.[2]
* A nominal data rate of 100 Mbit/s while the client physically moves at high speeds relative to the station, and 1 Gbit/s while client and station are in relatively fixed positions as defined by the ITU-R,[8]
* A data rate of at least 100 Mbit/s between any two points in the world,[8]
...
and many more
In 2009, SaskTel announced the construction of a new $172 million Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)/High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) wireless network. The first phase of the new network build, which will provide coverage in the major Saskatchewan centers, is expected to be available mid- 2010. Full coverage, similar to today?s digital cellular coverage, is anticipated to be available by the end of 2010.

At this time, SaskTel is currently working with cellular device vendors and partners, both current and new, to offer our customers a wide variety of devices to meet our customers? individual needs, including the iPhone.

The comments made by the SaskTel President and CEO in a news article on April 15, 2010 were not a confirmation of a release of a new version of the iPhone. The President was commenting on information that has been reported publicly and on the Internet for several months, which has speculated on the timing of a new release.
