Sears sells Android-powered iPhone as universe implodes on itself

Sears sells Android-powered iPhone as universe implodes on itself

Summary: Sears is selling the two-headed mutant of smart phones: an iPhone running Android 2.2. A cease and desist from Apple can't be too far behind.

SHARE:

Every once and in a while an event occurs that threatens to destabilize the very foundation of our universe. Getting Android to run on the iPhone is one of those events. And you can have a part in it.

Sears, via Canadian electronics site Factory Direct, is selling one such monstrosity. For $264 you can reap the benefits of both worlds, running the forever customizable Android on a slick and glossy iPhone.

The phone runs Android 2.2, and even comes with a little Android logo emblazoned on the back. There are a lot of funny bits in the product's description, including mentions of the iPhones dual-SIM support and Media Tek MTK6516 416MHZ processor.

Of course, getting Android to run on the iPhone isn't exactly a new phenomenon, but it is a bit strange that Sears of all places would have a hand in selling such a mutant. I'd wager it won't be long until Apple requests the thing get taken down, assuming that it's real, of course.

Someone feel like losing $264?

Update: According to Sears, the product has already been pulled. The company issued this statement:

"Thank you for bringing us your concern. This product was sourced via our Marketplace Seller, and we have immediately taken action and removed these products from the site."

And just like that, all is right in the world.

    That's not all, they also have an Android-powered BlackBerry Storm knockoff! Sears is going to get themselves in big trouble if they don't take those down.

        @snoop0x7b So does my truck, the radio on my desk, my alarm clock, my home theater, my whole home audio system and my boat, not sure why I need another. I have always wondered, is it the fact that some want an FM tuner or the fact that iOS devices don't have one that this is brought up?

    I don't see "iPhone" anywhere on the product description. That may get them off the hook. After all, it's just hardware they are reselling, not software.

    It is about time Apple put a real OS on their Phones! =D

    Seriously, who would buy an Android Phone running at 416 MHz?

    • Wait, there is more to this horror story

      @Peter Perry

      The "iPhonie" requires the AT&T network. Oh, the humanity. (or maybe not. Grin)

        No it doesn't .. We have them running on all of our carrier types in Canada (Telus, Bell, Rogers)
        It needs a HSPA network (or GSM ..)
        I believe they have a CDMA version too ...

      Huh?

      Where have you ever seen an iPhone4 with a 416mhz?

      It has the A4 running at 1ghz

        @CathyCC He's referring to the iPhoney that Sears was selling - that device has a 416MHz processor.

  • The page has been taken down

    I'm guessing either Sears had a rogue manager with bad judgment or they were hacked.

      @Michael Kelly no, what it is is they now have a marketplace, letting anyone sell stuff there, similar to amazon or ebay

    This may be a knockoff but it's got TV and support dual sim. I would say hardware wise it's superior than iPhone 4 already.

      @Samic

      Depending on where you are, you might be able to use the TV support. In North America, finding an analog TV signal is going to be a problem.
