Seven useful mobile apps for Labor Day weekend travel

By | September 3, 2010, 4:30am PDT

Summary: Here are seven mobile apps that could make your Labor Day weekend getaway, far or local, as smooth as possible.

Labor Day weekend is finally upon us. Instead of mourning the end of summer, take the weekend by charge and celebrate as best you can. Here are seven mobile apps that could make your weekend getaway, far or local, as smooth as possible.

THE WEATHER CHANNEL
This seems to be the one thing that most travelers often forget about: weather. In all the excitement and stress of packing and getting to the airport, checking the weather just falls off the radar. You can do this in a pinch with an app and some Internet access. The Weather Channel’s app is free, covers the world and is very comprehensive. (Not to mention that the iPad version is just fun to play around with.)

Knowing the weather forecast is especially important this time of year, given hurricane season and over-the-top temperatures around the country. Plus, you don’t want to be that person who shows up in San Francisco expecting brilliant California sunshine, only to be walking around freezing, wearing bermuda shorts and a t-shirt when the fog rolls in.

  • AirportAce HD
I am surprised AirportAce for iPad isn't on your list, it is like GateGuru but it is for iPad and shows terminal maps, parking, transportation options etc etc...love that app.

  • my favs Quick Connections for all your Contacts
my favs is a group contact management app that I use and it does a lot more than just let you reach your best friends. When I'm traveling I create a group that has the car rental agency, my hotels, the airline numbers, restaurants I want to go to and the friends I'm seeing all in new groups just for the trip. Then I can single tap to call any of them, or text them, or get directions in just a few taps way faster than the map app, the restaurant and venue entries let me check menus, show schedules, lots of stuff I would normally go to 3-5 other apps to do individually. The rest of these apps are great and I use them, but this app makes my trip really easy.
