Summary: Sharp is stepping up the writable Blu-ray disc market with the release of its new triple-layer Blu-ray discs with BDXL format specification, going by the code name VR-100BR1.

Sharp is stepping up the writable Blu-ray disc market with the release of its new triple-layer Blu-ray discs with BDXL format specification, going by the code name VR-100BR1.

Boasting 100GB of storage space, the VR-100BR1 are labeled BD-R, meaning one-time writable discs. But each disc should be able to hold up to 12 hours of digital TV programming. However, buying these discs only seem worth it if you already have a Sharp BD-HDW700 or BD-HDW70 Blu-ray player since they’re the only models that will support the VR-100BR1 discs.

Like most cool things, these discs will drop first in Japan on July 30. No word on when they will arrive on our shores. While the release says pricing is “open,” Akihabara News is reporting that each disc will cost ¥5,000 ($57). Yes, each disc.
