Skype sees record number of users following video chat releases

Summary: Skype has issued quite a few big releases lately, particularly the new iPhone video calling app and new group video calling packages. It looks like the developments are already paying off.

Skype has issued quite a few big releases lately, particularly the new iPhone video calling app and new group video calling packages. It looks like the developments are already paying off.

According to GigaOM, over 27 million users were signed into Skype at the same time yesterday, up from the average 25 million. Skype hasn’t come out and said outright that these were the contributing reasons, but it would only make sense if users were trying the features out. It would seem odd for that many more people to be making regular Skype chat calls on an ordinary Monday.

Been using their desktop software at least twice a day for video-calls around the world for more than two years. Used the previous beta versions with the group-calling feature until they put it into the last couple of general releases. The latest version (5.1.0.104 for PC) works fairly well and they seem to have worked out most of the rough edges. Rarely use the iPhone app, as previous versions didn't support video calls and current version (3.0.0) STILL doesn't support the rear-facing camera on iPhone 3G. That leaves all of our friends and family out, even though most of us have the dual, mini-mirror iSeeU attachment. So until Skype decides to address the huge user-base of older iPhones, most of us will continue to use the Live Link 3G app that has supported our camera for many months now. [The two downsides being that it doen't offer a desktop version like Skype and their 50/50 split-screen isn't as usable as Skype's full screen with smaller personal inset on the iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4.]
