TDK is revamping the old school boombox with some ultra-modern and high-tech touches, which is set to debut early next year.

The most obvious features on this sound system are the dual 6-inch coaxial drivers with a 6-inch subwoofer in center stage. But there's also a bunch of features you can only see when the device is turned on, specifically the 2.6-inch color screen and visualizer as well as the capacitive touch keys to manage the audio sources.

Those sources can be connected on the side (as pictured) via USB, 3.5mm and auxiliary jacks for connections to iPod/iPhones, other MP3 media players, and flash drives. Users can also connect musical instruments such as a guitar to play along to favorite songs. It could also make for a fun karaoke party.

For a bit of retro design, the silver-shaded rotary dials have made more heavy for a 1970s stereo equipment feel.

On the sound front, the speakers really do provide intense bass beats as I listened firsthand last week. Owners have a chance to play around with the equalizer to control the bass and treble as they see fit.

This 3-speaker edition is set to drop for $499 alongside 2-speaker and single speaker versions in January.

Other products set to roll out from under the Life on Record umbrella include a pair of belt-drive turntables and a pair of high-fidelity headphones with 50mm drivers.

@jasonp@... Now you're reminding me of my childhood and the 30 lb ghettoblaster I had as a kid.

    BELT DRIVE TURNTABLES!!!!!!!

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!!!!

Welcome to the world of wow and flutter.

Give me a quartz locked direct drive ANY DAY OF THE YEAR over a belt drive turntable. Especially one with the built in strobe and pitch adjustment!!!!

The first time I used one of these, I fell in LOVE with it:

The ones that I used back in the late 80's were at a radio station and they were in use 24 hours a day for over 5 years before the platter bearings began to make any noticeable noise.

@fatman65535 I have an SK1200 from the early 1980's. Still an amazing piece of kit.
