Sonic, RealD partnering to develop personal 3D entertainment solutions

By | June 9, 2010, 5:01am PDT

Despite some critics earlier this year, 3D entertainment is definitely not some 2010 craze. New developments are being announced each day. Today, it is Sonic Solutions and RealD that are teaming up to improve the playback and creation of 3D videos at home.

Sonic’s 3D push isn’t a secret at all given the company’s already existing “Total 3D Initiative,” which is basically about pushing more 3D home entertainment products, so this new project should align well with that. As for RealD, their signature platform is an enhanced version of the “side-by-side 3D format” with extra filters for improved HD viewing.

Basically, the goal of the partnership is to develop new solutions for creating and playback of 3D video content at home. Sonic will be incorporating the RealD Format into their RoxioNow software for improved quality playback as well as for the development of at-home 3D movie publishing.

Neither company has confirmed as to which 3D-enabled devices will support the hybrid technology first just yet, except that we should see these services available “this summer.”
