By | December 7, 2010, 7:53am PST

Summary: Take note, PlayStation 3 owners. Sony has a new system software update for you today.

Take note, PlayStation 3 owners. Sony has a new system software update for you to install soon.

However, with the exception of announcing that update version 3.55 is a “minor update that adds a security patch,” there aren’t any other details about this upgrade.

So be on the lookout next time you turn on your PS3 for a notice. Hopefully it won’t stall you from accessing Netflix or playing Call of Duty: Black Ops too long.

@mgillespie I guess it depends on the update, but they are slow compared to Xbox ones which I count in seconds.
So, which advertised features that I bought the machine because of are they going to disable this time?
@grant@... I agree. They should have never taken away Linux capability in PS3. People will hack it anyway so what's the point?
@statuskwo5 - Ummm, it DID warn you it was about to do that and you had to click to accept the update. You didn't have to accept the update.

Really?

@babyboomer57 Umm, yes, but in order to be able to play online you NEED to update. In other words, you either choose to update to use the PlayStation Network or you don't and use Linux.
@grant@...

What advertised features have they taken away? OtherOS was never an advertised feature. it was never in any official promotional matertial, it was never on the box.

You are a cretin if you bought your PS3 for OtherOS, as when it did work, it was cumbersome at best. I'm glad they removed it, it made the PS3 focus on the things it's great at. A great games system, a great media centre.

Get over it move on, play the awesome games it offers like GT5...

Business as usual

As long as the update doesn't take away features I'm fine with it. I guess the only downside with PS3 updates is that they take so darn long (downloading and installing). Xbox 360 is much faster in that respect, not counting major updates such as the Kinect update that took forever.
@statuskwo5

Mine took 3 minutes to download, install and reboot. Is that really a big deal? If it get, get PS+ and it will do it overnight for you, and it will also autoupdate all your games too.
