Sony's new Handycam HDR-PJ50 comes with its own built-in projector

By | July 5, 2011, 9:49am PDT

Summary: While all camcorders can record video, Sony’s latest HandyCam can also project them.

Consumer grade camcorders like Sony’s HandyCam may be under assault by the increasingly-capable lenses of your smartphone, but that doesn’t mean they can’t remain at least somewhat relevant.

Sony’s latest effort is the HDR-PJ50, a 1920×1080 HD video camera that also happens to have its own Pico projector. Capable of displaying a sixty inch image, the HDR-PJ50’s projector works on any flat surface - assuming, of course, that that flat surface happens to be in a fairly dark space. Pico projectors may be nifty, but they aren’t magical.

The HDR-PJ50’s other important specifications include a 220 GB hard drive 12x zoom, and Dolby 5.1-ready stereo speakers.

projectors cost hundreds of $$$ even for a budget version.
I'm wondering how is that affecting the camera price.

Probably around $125

Pico projectors aren't that expensive. Usually the projected image is less than 20", and like the article says - it needs to be dark to see anything... the light source is usually just a couple of high-end ultrabright LED's, rather than some expensive filament bulb or laser.
