Sprint announces $99 ZTE Optik tablet

Summary: Sprint's $99 ZTE tablet may sound like a deal, but it comes with a few caveats.

SHARE:

Recognizing that there is a market for super low-end tablets, Sprint has announced the ZTE Optik, an Android tablet that it plans to sell for $99.

Available February 5th, the Optik features a 7-inch 1280 x 800 display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. Not a bad set of features for its price.

Of course, its $99 price tag comes before the accumulated cost of a two-year contract. With 1GB data plans going for $20 a month, the final cost of the ZTE Optik will hover around at least $600 after twenty-four months. So it's not the best deal in the end. Off-contract, the Optik will sell for $349, which is also a bit high.

Of course, in an effort to keep the tablet's price low, ZTE didn't furnish the Optik with a 4G chip, putting a damper on the hopes that this would be a $99 WiMAX experience.

So, in short, approach this one with caution.

I guarantee this is good enough for the majority of people! Hell, it is better than the Fire and the Nook Tablet specs and you can pretty much use it for the same purpose.

"...data plans going for $20 a month, the final cost of the ZTE Optik will hover around at least $600 after twenty-four months." You need to check your maths...

    20 x 24 = 480
    +99 = 579....

@argon0 after you add taxes, surcharges, etc., i'm pretty sure the $20.00 data plan probably comes to more like $24.00 if they are close to what cell phone minutes cost.

I've been really happy with Sprint's WiMax service (I'm lucky enough to live in a fairly well covered market) but Sprint's 3G is very poor. I couldn't see myself paying $20.00 a month for Sprint 3G.

I got to see one of these this weekend. Mine was supposed to be delievered last Friday but the UPS driver wouldnt leave it on my porch. The unit is awesome. lightweight and awesome display. I do not like the idea of the $20 a month plus taxes plus a $4.99 per line credit risk charge I get. Sprint also offers no activation fee online which they did not honor for the tablet or my wife's iphone so will most be returning both. I never use 3g servive on my droid. I am either connected to wifi or 4 g in my car. the 3 g is terrible and dont see paying $20 for service I will not use which in effect makes this a $600 tablet.

enjoy it while you can the plug part wears out fast and ZTE gives you the run around when you want it fixed..Mine went bad after two months of unplugging and plugging in...they want you to give them information from under the battery which you can't get to..enjoy

I got the tablet and within 2 months it won't recharge..The plug is loose and when I got in touch with ZTE the manufacture of the tablet to request a solution to the problem they kept sending emails and requesting information that you can't give them..The info is suppose to be under the battery which you can't get to..I am getting the run around from ZTE and am paying for the 3G which I can't use..I wouldn't recommend this tablet to anyone, its a waste of money..
