The FireText smoke alarm texts your friends when there are signs of fire

By | July 11, 2011, 11:25am PDT

Summary: Safety and texting combine to create the FireText nominally interesting fire safety device.

It’s indisputable fact that smoke detectors have saved lives. But the device is stuck in the 20th century, back when phones had wires and people actually spoke on them. What better way to bring the smoke detector into the current century than by allowing it to send text messages when it detects an anomaly?

Enter the FireText. Via the included GSM SIM card, the FireText can be programmed to text four numbers (even your own) a custom when smoke is detected. Of course that same functionality can also be invoked in the more likely event that you burn some toast or forget about that pot of rice you left on the stove. So the device is certainly not foolproof. But it is neat.

And expensive. Safety, it seems, does not come cheap, as the FireText runs for $144. There is also the all-too-important matter of paying a carrier for the data transmission from the embedded SIM card.
