A lot of people were surprised and buzzing last year when it was announced President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. And now to keep everyone guessing and talking, the Internet has made it to the short list of nominees for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.

According to the AP/Forbes, the Internet drew backing after a petition got started by Wired Italy. As reported by Wired in the US, the mag's publishers says the world wide web can be "destroy hate and conflict and to propagate peace and democracy." Citing the use of Twitter in Iran, supporters says the power of the Internet "outweighs any negative use of the international network."

The competition? Russian activist Svetlana Gannushkina and her human rights group, Memorial, plus recently-jailed Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese dissident imprisoned for his leadership in movements for human rights and freedom of expression. (Apparently, China's government asked the jury to "disregard the submission." Are they cheering for the Internet? What about Google?)

The arguments for the Internet, as being a revolutionary and changing force around the world, are compelling. And given the unpredictability of the Nobel Prize selection committee and their lack of interest in what people think of their decisions, the Internet could very well win.

But should the interwebs wins, what kind of acceptance speech can the Internet provide? And who will accept on its behalf?

  • Who cares about the "Peace Prize?"

Whatever credibility the Peace Prize once had has been utterly lost and is now the object of ridicule on late-night TV. I think it's now such an object of derision that someone winning that prize in the future will find it damaging, not enhancing, to his or her legacy.

Might I suggest this year that the committee award the Peace Prize to Iran's leader?

    • $$$$

1.5 million dollars... I prefer euros, but it has a bunch of credibility with me either way. There aren't many TV shows with a prize like that. (The British "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" is more, I think.)

  • RE: The Internet makes short list for 2010 Nobel Peace Prize nominees

    Questions to ponder...
    1. If the "Internet" wins the Nobel Peace Prize, does the prize money go to Al Gore?
    2. Does the short list also include VP Joe Biden (who could be argued as deserving it just as much as Pres Obama did this year)?!?

    • NO! Al Gore didn't invent the Internet, look it up (NT)

I think the prize should go to T Berners-Lee.

    • Absolutely Agree

Since he's credited with the invention of the WWW, it'd make sense to acknowledge his contribution.

  • The Internet, like corporations, should be considered

This nomination is completely asinine. The
Internet, in it-self, has done nothing for world
peace. We should respect and acknowledge the
individuals and groups who work within the
    internet to provide peace.

1.AN EXAMPLE OF HOW EFFECTIVELY THE INTERNET HAS HELPED FURTHER THE CAUSE OF THE WORLD-PEACE, PROSPERITY AND DEMOCRACY:

".....THE POTENTIAL ADVERSARIES MUST BE INTEGRATED INTO INTERNATIONAL MAINSTREAM..."

The above point is there included in my following email that was sent to the president@whitehouse.gov, vice.president@whitehouse.gov on Sunday, February 5, 2006 7:17 PM

"THE MOST SUITABLE DOCTRINE ON FOREIGN POLICY FOR USA TO FOLLOW IN THE PRESENT CENTURY :

THE PRESENT ERA BASICALLY IS AN ERA OF PEACE AND WHICH MUST NECESSARILY BE OF PEACE IN VIEW OF NUMEROUS PRESSING FACTORS.THE BEST FOREIGN POLICY THAT USA IN SUCH AN ALTOGETHER NEW CONTEXT MUST FOLLOW TO SAFEGUARD PARTICULARY THE USA NATIONAL INTERESTS AND IN GENERAL THE WORLD PEACE CAN BEST BE SUMMARISED AS THE "POLICY/DOCTORINE OF THE CIS " AS GIVEN BELOW :

    1.COUNTER BALANCING:

THE POTENTIAL ADVERSARIES MUST BE COUNTER BALANCED BY HELPING SOME THIRD NATION STATE EMERGE AS THE BALANCING FACTOR.FOR EXAMPLE, I HAD ADVISED YOU( IN MY EMAILS SENT TO YOU IN THE FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY, 2005 )THAT IT IS IN THE USA NATIONAL INTERESTS TO HELP INDIA EMERGE THE GLOBAL POWER A THING WHICH SHALL BALANCE CHINA!HOWEVER , I HAVE CONCLUDED IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR 2005 THAT THIS COMPONENT ALONE MUST NOT FORM THE AXIS OF THE USA FOREIGN POLICY !Rather DUE EMPHASIS MUST BE PLACED ON THE ELEMENT OF 'INTEGRATION."

    2.INTEGRATION:

THE POTENTIAL ADVERSARIES MUST BE INTEGRATED INTO INTERNATIONAL MAINSTREAM , BE IT POLITICAL ,ECONOMIC,SOCIAL,CULTURAL SO AS TO MINIMISE AND ROOT OUT THE SCOPE FOR SOME ADVERSARY BUILDING UP MILITARY POWER IN ISOLATION TO THREATEN WORLD PEACE.HOWEVER , I HAVE CONCLUDED NOW IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR 2006 THAT THESE COMPONENTS OF" C & I" ALONE MUST NOT FORM THE AXIS OF THE USA FOREIGN POLICY !Rather DUE EMPHASIS MUST BE PLACED ON THE ELEMENT OF "SHARING THE FRUITS OF CIVILISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT" BESIDES THE "C & I" , ALSO !

3."SHARING THE FRUITS OF CIVILISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT" :

THIS ELEMENT NECESSISATES SHARING OF THE FRUITS OF CIVILISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN ALL ITS NUMEROUS DIMENSIONS LIKE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL , POLITICAL ,SOCIAL,etc. amongst the whole WORLD POPULATION .WHEN THIS ELEMENT COMES INTO PLAY THEN IT SHALL CERTAINLY MINIMISE AND WIPE OUT ANY SCOPE FOR THREAT TO WORLD PEACE FROM FACTORS LIKE TERRORISM!

TO MY MIND , A PERFECT EFFECTIVE FOREIGN POLICY MUST CONSTITUTE OF 30 % EMPHASIS ON "C" , 30 % EMPHASIS ON "I" AND 40 % EMPHASIS ON "S".THE EFFECTIVE OPERATION OF THIS DOCTRINE OF "CIS" SHALL CERTAINLY PROTECT VITAL USA NATIONAL INTERESTS AND THE WORLD PEACE! ......"

POSSIBLE IMPACT ON THE WORLD-PEACE: NOW, OBAMA, the President of the USA is talking in terms of GIVING AN EQUAL ROLE TO CHINA and INDIA in the world affairs rather than treating these two as adversaries to the USA. Also, the OBAMA ADMINISTRATION is now talking in terms of an integrated world......!

    2. BUT, DOES THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE COMMITTEE EVER RECOGNISES THE WORLD-PEACE EFFORTS MADE BY WEBSURFERS LIKE US?

  • The Nomination of the Internet for Nobel Peace Prize 2010 An Excellent Step

The Nomination of the Internet for Nobel Peace Prize 2010 by Wired Italy - An Excellent Step Forward!
    1. Its really heartening to learn of the esteemed Italian magazine "Wired Italy" pushing for the nomination of the Internet for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. Its an idea whose time has come.
    2. The Internet has helped promote the cause of the world-peace and democracy. It has provided the easiest and monetarily cheapest way/means for the Global Citizens cutting across the barriers of polity and geography to reach out to the policy-makers/decision-takers in an effective way.
    3. It might be interesting and instructive to know how the Internet helps do this. Well, it happens like this ? YOU EMAIL TO THE CONCERNED AUTHORITIES WITH YOUR EFFECTIVE IDEAS/OPINIONS.ALSO, YOUR THESE GREAT IDEAS/OPINIONS PUT ON BLOGS ARE READ BY GENERAL READERS/POLICY MAKERS/DECISION TAKERS.THE AUTHORITIES/OFFICIALS CERTAINLY GO THROUGH YOUR IDEAS/OPINIONS. THESE IDEAS/OPINIONS INFLUENCE THEIR THOUGHT PROCESS WHICH ULTIMATELY GETS REFLECTED IN THEIR SUBSEQUENT POLICIES MADE AND DECISIONS TAKEN. NOW, LET US BE VERY CLEAR ? YOU MAY NOT GET THE CREDIT FOR THOSE IDEAS/OPINIONS- BUT, THEN YOU HAVE INDIRECTLY HELPED PROMOTE THE CAUSE OF THE PEACE/DEMOCRACY IN THE WORLD.
    4. NOW, YOU MAY ASK ME TO SUBSTANTIATE/SUPPORT MY AFORESAID STATEMENT WITH SOME EXAMPLE. I CAN GIVE YOU MY OWN EXAMPLE IN THIS REGARD. I have sent numerous emails to the WHITE HOUSE/USA PRESIDENT/VICE-PRESIDENT, since the year 2005, containing my effective views/thoughts/ideas/opinions on numerous topics having a direct/indirect bearing on the world-peace/democracy. My this work has influenced definitely the thought process of the USA/WHITE HOUSE/AMERICAN ADMINISTRATION IN A WAY THAT HAS FURTHERED THE CAUSE OF THE WORLD-PEACE AND DEMOCRACY. TO CITE JUST ONE EXAMPLE, THE RECENT RECONCILIATION-APPROACH OF THE AMERICAN ADMINISTRATION TOWARDS THE AFGHAN-TALIBAN ISSUE. WHILE THE THEN GENERAL MUSHARRAF, THE PAKISTANI PRESIDENT HAD ADVOCATED FINISHING THE AFGHAN TALIBAN, I HAD ADVISED THE USA ADMINISTRATION TO ADOPT THE RECONCILIATION APPROACH through my emails. NOW, ITS AMPLY CLEAR, THE APPROACH ADVOCATED BY ME HAS CERTAINLY BEEN ADOPTED BY THE USA ADMINISTRATION/EUROPEAN COMMUNITY WHICH FAVOURED THROUGH THE RECENT LONDON CONFERENCE THE RECONCILIATION APPROACH ON THE VEXING AFGHAN-TALIBAN ISSUE. You may like to peruse my blog http://groups.msn.com/geography [ now replaced with http://worldgeography.multiply.com ] to see my above cited emails to the WHITE HOUSE/USA ADMINISTRATION.

  • What Short List?

To say that the Internet is on the "short list" for the 2010 award
is misleading, if not completely inaccurate. Thousands of
individuals and organizations around the world are eligible
to nominate candidates and they can submit anybody or
anything -- including a Hitler or a Stalin (both of whom
were nominated) or something as outlandish as the
Internet. Some years ago a Swedish parliamentarian
nominated the game of soccer for the prize. And some
people are using Twitter to drum up support for a Michael
Jackson nomination, not realizing that the Nobel
stipulations rule out posthumous prizes. The nominations,
in other words, don't mean anything.

Later in the year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee will sift
through the hundreds of nominations it has received and
draw up a short list of serious contenders for further
research. The candidates on this list will be known to no
more than a dozen people and kept secret for a period of
50 years. The final choice will be made by the committee
in the early fall and announced in October.

  • So it's official - the Nobel committee has run outta ideas...

Let's see... They gave it to Obama who hasn't done anything to earn it. Now they're thinking about giving it to the internet - which looks to be the battlefield for the 21st century. And if you don't think that's the case - just look at what the Chinese government was allegedly doing just a month or so ago - backing hackers who compromised Google.

Cyber warfare IS likely to be coming down the pike soon enough.

  • The Internet had already Foreseen/Advocated the Afghan solution

The Internet had already Foreseen/Advocated/Advised Reconciliatory solution to the Afghan Political Problem!

1.The Internet has been quite effective in promoting the cause of the world-peace, harmony, human rights, prosperity and democracy on our beautiful planet earth .For example, the International Conference that was held recently in London has concluded that a RECONCILIATION KIND OF APPROACH involving giving a chance and monetary incentives to the extremists/Taliban to encourage the militants to give up violence and integrate with the Afghan society and/or migrate safely to other foreign lands is the only most/best effective way to get Afghanistan out of the current political troubles. This shall help the NATO, USA and their allied military forces to get out of Afghanistan quickly , thereby minimising the loss of human lives/collateral damage to all the players concerned and rebuild a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan. Now, you read my following comments/piece of advice:

"5. Pervez Musharraf?s simplistic remedy of wiping out the Taliban shall not root out the Islamic Extremism or the so-called terrorism .".....
"7.THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THE ABOVE DELINEATED PROBLEM IS TO RISE ABOVE THE NARROW PERSONAL POLITICAL AGENDA AND INSTEAD GIVE A CHANCE TO RECONCILIATION AND PEACE IN TERMS OF THE ? FORGIVE AND FORGET ? SPIRITUAL BEHAVIOURAL ATTITUDES through a complete reorientation of the FOREIGN POLICY of the WEST along the Universal Spiritual lines !"....

2.NOW, IT SHOULD BECOME FULLY CLEAR THAT THESE IDEAS WERE CERTAINLY CIRCULATING IN THE WEB-WORLD[ THE INTERNET]. NOW, THE WEST, PARTICULARLY THE NATO COUNTRIES/UK/USA SEEM TO HAVE COME AROUND TO NEARLY THE SAME IDEAS WHAT I HAD ADVOCATED/ADVISED MUCH WAY BACK IN THE YEAR 2006 IN ORDER TO MOBILIZE INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT TO GET PEACE TO THE TROUBLE-TORN AFGHANISTAN.....!

  • This feels more like a "Time Person of the Year" winner ...

... than the Nobel Peace Prize winner. Organizations have won the Peace Prize before, but Time gets all goofy giving the Person of the Year to "You" or "The Computer" or whatever.

Whatever. It'll make headlines and maybe that's what they want.

  • RE: The Internet makes short list for 2010 Nobel Peace Prize nominees

Nice. On the 20th anniversary of the web, a very appropriate
nobel. Of course, it should go to the the "world wide web", not
the Internet. That's what changed the world. Without it, we'd be
busy with e-mail and newsgroups. Give the award to Tim
    Berners-Lee.

  • An odd nomination...

True that the Internet has made world a smaller
place. The Internet has spread awareness,
maybe, but not PEACE. How can something that,
among many things, is also a tool for fraud,
theft, embezzlement be awarded the Nobel prize
for peace?! It's an amusing nomination, but
    definitely not deserving. Additionally, it's
evolved to become an instrument of terrorism. I
don't mean to dampen the spirit here, but it's
odd that all this could have been overlooked
    before nomination...

  • The Indo-Pak war was helped averted by Internet/World Wide Web after 26/11

The Indo-Pak war was helped averted by The Internet/World Wide Web after 26/11!

1.Not many analysts are aware of the powerful role played by the Internet/world wide web in helping avert the Indo-Pak War in the aftermath of the Mumbai's 26/11 terror attack.

2.How was this achieved?Well, When Most of the Indians and all major Indian political parties seemed to be favouring an attack on Pakistan then, which would have resulted SURELY into the Indo-Pak War then there were saner voices like us who carried out relentless campaign against the WAR APPROACH by making effective use of the Internet/World Wide Web to moblize support against this mad war approach. We sent our emails to TV channels and also put on my MSN blog THE DANGERS/PITFALLS OF THIS WAR APPROACH AND ADVOCATED PEACEFUL DIPLOMATIC APPROACH TO HAMMER OUT THE SOLUTION. ITS AN OPEN SECRET THAT THE WEB BLOGS LIKE MINE WERE BEING MONITORED BY VARIOUS INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES INCLUDING THE INDIAN INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES AND DECISION-TAKERS/POLITICIANS/INDIAN MEDIA PERSONNEL, WHICH IN TURN HELPED ALL THESE PEOPLE CONCLUDE AGAINST GOING FOR A WAR AGAINST PAKISTAN, THEREBY ACHIEVING PEACE IN THE INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT...NOW, I COULD INFLUENCE DIRECTLY/INDIRECTLY THE THINKING OF THOSE AT THE HELM OF THE AFFAIRS OF THE INDIAN POLITY THEN SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE EASE AND QUICKNESS PROVIDED TO ME BY THIS POWERFUL AND MONETARILY CHEAPEST TOOL OF COMMUNICATION CALLED THE INTERNET/WORLD WIDE WEB....!

    3. To cite just one example, go through my following blog-piece:

INDO-PAK WAR NOT THE PERMANENT SOLUTION TO TERRORISM IN INDIA

    1. The INDO-PAK WAR is not going to be the permanent solution to the problem of terrorism being faced by Indian COMMON CITIZENS?! INDIA HAS FOUGHT 3 MAJOR WARS WITH PAKISTAN in addition to the KARGIL INTRUSION of 1999.
    2. UNDERSTANDABLY, THE ENRAGED PEOPLE OF MUMBAI ARE ADVOCATING ACTION AGAINST PAKISTAN IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE MUMBAI?s 26/11?.BUT, SHALL COMMON INDIAN CITIZENS ACHIEVE OUT OF WAR WITH PAKISTAN? OUR DEFENCE FORCES SHALL GO , ATTACK PAKISTAN, DEFEAT PAKISTAN?.BUT, IN THE PROCESS BOTH INDIAN AND PAKISTANI CITIZENS SHALL SUFFER UNTOLD HUMAN MISERIES/ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS IN TERMS OF DEATHS OF HUMANS[MILITARY/INNOCENT CIVILIANS]/DESTRUCTION OF ECONOMIES?..AGAIN, OUR INDIAN POLITICAL/BUREAUCRATIC ESTABLISHMENT HAND BACK TO PAKISTAN ALL THE CONQUERED PAKISTANI AREAS THE WAY THEY DID IN 1971 WAR WITH PAKISTAN???SO, WHO SHALL BE THE REAL SUFFERER?NOT THE INDIAN POLITICIAN, NOT THE INDIAN BUREAUCRAT.BUT, THE REAL SUFFERER SHALL BE THE COMMON INDIAN CIVILIAN AND THE INDIAN DEFENCE PERSONNEL??..!
    3. SO, we COMMON INDIANS MUST KEEP OUR HEADS COOL, PRESSURISE OUR INDIAN POLITICAL/BUREAUCRATIC ESTABLISHMENT TO BECOME TOTALLY CLEAN,NON-CORRUPT,EFFECTIVE,PATRIOTIC,HONEST,EFFICIENT AND WE MUST MAKE THIS ESTABLISHMENT TO DISPLAY EXEMPLARY DIPLOMATIC/POLITICAL SKILLS IN DEALING FIRMLY WITH PAKISTAN WITHOUT ANY HUMAN/ECONOMIC LOSSES TO INDIA?.THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF WAYS TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL WITHOUT GOING INTO A WAR WITH PAKISTAN?.LET US MAKE OUR INDIAN ESTABLISHMENT TOTALLY ACCOUNTABLE AND TRANSPARENT?HOW COULD ANYONE DARE TERRORISE INDIA IF INDIA ITSELF WERE AND PERCEIVED AS SUCH BY OTHERS TO BE UNITED AND STRONG ON ALL FRONTS?
    4. I APPRECIATE INDIAN MEDIA?s ROLE IN REAWAKENING THE COMMON INDIANS, ESPECIALLY THOSE LIVING IN METROPOLIS?.BUT, LET ME SPEAK THE TRUTH BLUNTLY TO INDIAN MEDIA?.YOUR THIS CORRECT EFFORT SHALL GET FORGOTTEN AFTER 1-23 MONTHS?.SO, IF THE INDIAN MEDIA REALLY WANTS A CHANGE, HERE IS THE MANTRA I AM GIVING TO THE INDIAN MEDIA/BUSINESS PEOPLE ? FORM A ?SAVE INDIA POLITICAL COMPANY? ALONG THE LINES OF CORPORATE WORLD, ADVERTISE/SELECT 545 EFFICIENT,SELFLESS,EFFECTIVE,HONEST,PATRIOTIC AND DYNAMIC CANDIDATES AND MAKE THEM CONTEST THE GENERAL ELECTIONS FROM ALL 545 PARLIAMENTARY CONSTITUENCIES IN INDIA[ IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR INDIAN BUSINESS WORLD TO KEEP ASIDE A SUM OF RS 545 CRORES AT THE RATE OF ONE CRORE PER CANDIDATE]?AND BELIEVE ME YOU WILL HAVE WON MAJORITY OF PARLIAMENTARY SEATS IN 2009 GENERAL ELECTIONS AND BROUGHT ABOUT THE REAL CHANGE THAT YOU AND COMMON INDIANS DESIRE TO BRING IN INDIA?! I NEVER ADVOCATE MILITARY REVOLUTIONS BECAUSE I BELIEVE FIRMLY THAT DEMOCRACY AT ANY RATE/GIVEN TIME IS FAR BETTER OPTION THAN DICTATORSHIP??! IF YOU CANNOT IMPLEMENT THE ABOVE MANTRA THAT I HAVE GIVEN YOU, WELL MY DEAR INDIAN BUSINESS PEOPLE/HOUSES/COMMON INDIANS/INDIAN MASS MEDIA BE READY TO FORGET THE TEARS OF MUMBAI IN 1-2 MONTHS AND GO AHEAD WITH YOUR ROUTINE MUNDANE LIVES???THEN, DON?T REALLY BLAME THE CURRENT INDIAN POLITICAL/BUREAUCRATIC ESTABLISHMENT???.THEY WILL CONTINUE FILLING UP THE POLITICAL SPACE IF YOU DON?T TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY?.IN ANY CASE, INDIA SHALL HAVE CHANGED FOR BETTER BY 2050 AD BECAUSE THE PRESENT YOUNGER GENERATION OF INDIA[BELOW THE AGE OF 35 YEARS] SHALL BE NEARLY 77 YEARS OF AGE IN 2050 AD AND AS SUCH THIS CURRENT YOUNGER LOT OF INDIANS SHALL BE IN FULL CONTROL OF LEVERS OF POWER IN 2050 AD?..!

    With Blessings,

    Swaamee Aprtemaanandaa Jee,

    India.

  • Stick to real people

A powerful tool only magnifies the intent behind those who use it. The Internet is a tool. It can be used for good or for evil, peace or war. There are definitely people putting it to good use, however it is also used to coordinate other less-than-favorable intent.

I think we should stick to nominating actual people. I appreciate the intent, the Internet is powerful. But I disagree with the desired result. It should not be declared a peaceful tool. That's just incorrect.

  • The Internet deserves to be honoured...!

1.No doubt, the Internet/World wide web is a non-human being. But, it has played an extraordinary role in promoting world-peace in terms of being an extraordinary medium of instant real-time communication for people across the globe. As such, the medium deserves to be honoured.
2.As regards the question of honouring a real person, well, its clear that those people who invented the internet/world wide web and also those people who used this medium hyperbrilliantly to try and get peace a sustainable chance in our life-time on our beautiful planet earth deserve to be AND NATURALLY WOULD BE honoured with recognition/award in case of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee correctly deciding to honour the Internet/World-Wide-Web with the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR THE YEAR 2010.SO, THE DOUBT THAT NO REAL PERSON/S IS/ARE GOING TO BE HONOURED BY THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE COMMITTEE IN CAE OF THE INTERNET/WORLD WIDE WEB BEING SELECTED AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR THE YEAR 2010 ARE TOTALLY MISPLACED/WRONG...!
