The iPad 2: Why Apple has finally convinced me to buy a tablet

By | March 2, 2011, 12:00pm PST

Summary: When Apple first introduced the iPad in early 2010, I wasn’t convinced. However, after today’s announcement, I think I’m going to jump on the bandwagon. Here’s why.

When Apple first introduced the iPad in early 2010, I wasn’t convinced. However, after today’s announcement, I think I’m going to jump on the bandwagon. Here’s why.

To start, I’m going to explain why I was so adamantly opposed to buying the first iPad.

First, I refuse to buy first-generation Apple products anymore. I learned this mistake all too well with the iPod mini, which never even made it to a third generation. The biggest problem I had with that device (as well as with a 12-inch PowerBook and 13-inch MacBook), the battery diminished within months. I can’t count how many times I traded it in at the Apple Store for a new one (thanks to AppleCare’s extended warranty), but I know it was at least on three occasions within the span of a year.

I will admit, however, that I haven’t always taken my own advice. I did buy the first-generation iPhone with its shiny silver backside in December 2007, six months after the wunderkind was released. However, I caved, which I don’t entirely regret it as it was my first smartphone and at the time it felt like it changed my life. Nevertheless, the iPhone 3G made its debut only six months later, and I was stuck with the Edge network and only 8GB of storage space until I got the iPhone 4 in August 2010.

Secondly, I refuse to buy products just because they have the Apple name brand attached. I will disclose that I own a 13-inch MacBook Pro, following the two aforementioned laptops. So obviously, I’m not going to deny that I’m a bit of a Mac lover. But the biggest example I can provide here is Apple TV. I was actually quite excited about this one prior to the announcement of the second-generation box as I do have a couple of season passes (Glee and Gossip Girl - don’t hate me). Yet, I was hoping the new Apple TV would have its own hard drive so I wouldn’t have to try to stream content from my computer to my television. Once the latest Apple TV was introduced last September with the rental model, I said, “forget it.”

This is how I felt about the iPad. I was excited about it, but then it lacked many of the specs I hoped for - namely a front-facing camera and an SD card slot. It’s also become clear that Apple usually steps up the specs on a second-generation product while making the price more attractive to consumers. I just wasn’t ready to pay $499 for 16GB of SSD space, so I was definitely going to wait. I wanted a larger portable device so I could get work done while traveling, but I was quite opposed to the idea of typing on a touch screen.

To remedy that situation, I bought an HP Mini 110 on Black Friday last year. While it is a fine netbook with plenty of storage space and it worked well enough, I’m not a netbook person. I’m an impatient person - especially when it comes to slow technology. Processors on netbooks just aren’t fast enough for me yet, either when it comes to toggling between multiple windows, editing photos or watching movies on an airplane.

I also wanted an e-book reader. The primary reasons as to why I bought the Nook Color was because it fit in any bag easily and I could read magazines in their proper form rather than just the text available on the electronic ink version of the Nook or the Amazon Kindle.

However, I would prefer to have one gadget instead of two, and it would be nice to be able to sync all of my information across all of my portable devices: my MacBook Pro, my iPhone 4 and now…and iPad 2. Today’s announcement really convinced me that I need to downsize my gadget inventory and just give in to buying a tablet already.

Not only are two cameras present (as rumored previously), but the iPad 2 will be sporting an A5 chip with dual-core processors that are promised to be faster than the A4 but use the same amount of power consumption. I’ve played around with the first-gen iPad, so I have no reservations about how speedy the iPad 2 will be with this 2x faster CPU and 9x faster graphics.

Although I didn’t get my SD card slot (nor price drops), the iPad 2 is still very travel-friendly with the same 10-hour battery life but also because of a 33% thinner body and 1.3-pound weight.

As for that touch screen, I’ve convinced myself that I should just spring for the external portable keyboard. I forgot that I had done this with a Sony Clié handheld in college to take notes, and it worked quite well for me then. It’s worth a shot now.

So come March 11, I am very likely to place an order for an iPad 2. Will you be buying the iPad 2 as well?

iPad 1 and IPad 2 have a SD card capability

It's included with the Camera Connection Kit along with a USB adapter (which, while designed for cameras, does work with USB headsets).

They will take you money, sure, but they don't like customers who wait, they want customers to buy every version they put out.

You better get the iPad 3 in 6 months.

65000 tablet apps against 100 is real killer
DeRSSS Updated - 2nd Mar 2011
Also, iPad has better quality screen (IPS, all layers glued together -- neither other tablet has it, despite better resolution) and much thinner than competitors.

As to iPad 3, it is rumours. "iPad Retina" may appear, though -- but not necessary this year. Jobs used 2011 is the year of iPad 2 few times specifically to hint that.
@denisrs
It doesn't have better screen quality. Another myth.

You make some of the stupidest statements. Yes ios has more apps. Let's talk in 6 months. Every major app writer is going to be taking advantage of the Honeycomb market. But screens?? I spent about an hour with the xoom. It flies and the screen is awesome. I went to the apple store. The screen was nice, but in my humble opinion it doesn't compare. By the way, have you tried to read an ipad outside? I'm pretty disappointed they didn't go with a non-reflective screen. Glossy is pretty, but so impractical if you actually want to use the thing.

@denisrs

You keep repeating 65000 against 100.

How was that lame-assed reply even remotely applicable to what you replied to?

The OP wrote NOTHING about a competing platform.

Give it a freaking rest already, the foam is becoming visible around the edges of your posts.

PS: "neither other tablet" ?

.
@larsonjs Yes ios has more apps. Let's talk in 6 months.
Haven't we been hearing this same argument for 12-18 months now in regard to smartphones?
@Will Farrell

I guess Dell and HP don't release new computers every 6 or so months either?
@Will Farrell

I think she is. She just got suckered into buying an external keyboard for the iBrick 2. The only thing these toys seem good for is bloggers with very short columns (or apparently they need an external keyboard).
@tonymcs@... I respect your point of view, even if I don't share it, becaue that's what these forums are for--exchanging thoughts and opinions.

But your disposition to use terms like iBrick, or some say crApple, or i[insertsomethingterriblehere], only makes someone who reads your comments think that your opinion is null and void because you can't think objectively past your default bias of hate against Apple. It looks like you can't be objective at all, and then your opinions have zero merit.

Now from pieces of other posts I've read from you, I don't necessarily think that's true...that you can't see forest for trees. But the way you communicate is saying that.

Just an observation. I thought you might actually have something to say.
@Will Farrell

Just like with the iPod over the years, consumers don't have to buy every iPad that's released. Not like it will stop working or being useful when the newer gen is released. But Apple do have the ability to revise it enough each time to make the last gen look obsolete.
@dave95. I'm just glad that no other manufacturer, in no other industry improves its product enough for me to want to upgrade...
It seems that waiting for the second generation is always the most prudent way to go. As outlined in the article, there are few instances were you don't regret buying on the first day. You are a lying to yourself if you think the iPad 2's upgrades are so superior to the orginal that the technical advances justify buying another, you just want one because its better and new. It makes complete sense to buy an iPad every time they release a new version, that way when iPad 4 comes out you will have one for both hands and feet. Just imagine all of the possible apps for that. Anyway, I enjoyed this post and nice to hear there are still blogs that have not completely sold out to the Apple bandwagon, I will also be buying the iPad 2 although it doesnt have flash, but I bet iPad 3 wont either because Jobs believes he is god's gift to the earth.
@djh3030
Hahaha!!! Both hands and FEET!! ROFL!

Thanks for that. First good laugh today.
@Will Farrell And exactly what company does not like a customer that buys every version of a product they put out?
Thanks to Loverock's predictions for iPad's failure I'll definitely be buying one. I was on the fence, but so far I haven't had a good run putting any hopes on vaporware and looking at the calendar. The latest Droid malware reports have put the cap on any thoughts heading that direction, unless Google starts at least SOME submission screening and soon.
@I12BPhil
Same here, see you at the Apple store!!!!
@Hasam1991
I wonder how many times in a day you just drop your droid and go to iOS! That too daily trading droid for iPhone or iPad. Gwash, it seems you have a lot of droids.
It's not enough for me. I'll pass on this one as well.
You're a techie. Take the Nook Color, root it, put Honeycomb on it and enjoy. Save $250. Enjoy.

It must hurt...
CarlosViscarra 2nd Mar 2011
@hoaxoner
To have so much hatred for a successful entity which only serves as a window into where the real hate is facing; inwards.

Only a geek could possibly compare a nook to an iPad.
And take into account all the malware apps out there... And you have a recipe for disaster! And 50????? Is that what google told you? LoL!!!
@CarlosViscarra
You only download apps from the android market and you're fine. The malware apps come from downloading apps from outside the marketplace.

The Nook Color remains $250. This is not made up. The iPad is $500. She likes the 7" form design, so she should keep it.

I do not hate the iPad. I fail to see the usefulness of it. In the blogger's position, she already has a functioning tablet. Instead of just getting rid of it, why not play with it and see where its capabilities lie? If she can add value to it, mores the better, rather than just trashing it.

And your existential nonsense is boring and not very well thought out. Something out of Narnia, methinks. Read some real philosophy and get back to me.
@CarlosViscarra

I'm surprised any Apple fan mentions hatred against a successful entity! I remember the days when all that hatred was targeted @ Microsoft. Besides, he hasn't said anything impractical or untrue, maybe not just to your taste. And he didn't compare the two devices.

As a BlackBerry user, I think I'd rather wait for the Playbook pricing to be announced 'cos that's all Apple has on it. I like the idea of linking my phone to my tablet. Besides, the iPad is too big for some of us.
@CarlosViscarra
You clearly have never used an Android device before.
@CarlosViscarra I've never seen Google publish an app that intentionally bricked the enduser's device. Commisar Jobs has done this twice (iPhone 1 openly, iPhone 3 with a 'bad' patch.) Frankly? I don't want any more to do with either company than I already do.
@CarlosViscarra
I would take the malware over Apple deciding what is good for me. If you have half a brain you can avoid the malware, it is not even as hard to avoid as it is on Windows. Just look at who is making the app. I have never had a windows malware or virus, it is all in using sensible practices.
@hoaxoner You only download apps from the android market and you're fine. The malware apps come from downloading apps from outside the marketplace.

Sorry to disappoint but you are misinformed if you think you have to go outside the Marketplace to download malware.
@hoaxoner
Yeah take a Chevy Aveo and compare it to a BMW 3 series... or take Walmart sunglasses and compare them to Oakley etc etc etc

As a techie you should demand the best in quality!!
@Hasam1991
I see. What quality is that exactly? Build quality? Operating System quality? Parts quality? Personal use?

Oh, I forgot, you're an apple guy. It's all about the so-called "user experience".

The Nook Color is a fantastic device in terms of quality. the iPad is not worth double.
@Hasam1991
iPad has worse specs than an Android tablet already released (Xoom). So, I guess iPad is the Chevy Aveo in this comparison, no?
@hoaxoner What is this Nook thing anyway ??? It's a device or something ? Never heard it, never see their ad's in here. May be it great device, but not marketed so well, soo .... not everybody knows.
@Hasam1991 As a technician you should demand the ability to modify, customize, and trick out your system. As a groupie you mindlessly accept products that the corporate system tells you are all you should have to fit in with all the other sheep.
@voltusbazoka
WOW! I hope you are joking. The Nook is a very popular e-reader, second only to the Kindle. It's based on the Android OS, and has a very strong developer community behind it. I don't personally have one, so I can't attest to its performance; but I've read that the Honeycomb (Android tablet OS) that's been ported to it works very well.

I agree with hoaxoner; if she's already got the Nook, there's no harm in doing a little reading and trying out the ports out there that make the device into a fully functional Android tablet. She just may end up being impressed with it, and save herself a couple hundred dollars.
@hoaxoner Ummm... Yeah, I would just rather buy an iPad and use the rest of my time with the girlfriend like 90% of the population. I'm not going to waste my time hacking this, installing that... nonsense.
@outdplay@...
It really only takes minutes and someone that can follow simple directions to root/install Froyo/Honeycomb on a nook. Believe me and i think your girlfriend will agree that a few minutes may seem like a long time to you but in reality it's not that long.

The simple fact is very few people
James Quinn 2nd Mar 2011
@faxmonkey
would or will even consider this option. That is a FACT.

Pagan jim
@outdplay

Better idea: Take the few minutes it takes to mod your Nook, end up with a fully functional Android tablet, and spend the $500 you could have waste on an iPad on your girlfriend instead.

Of course, if you prefer being a tool and getting the latest iDevice cuz Steve says so, or your girlfriend is in fact Steve; by all means, get that iPad.
@hoaxoner

She mentions she is not happy with netbook performance. Nook Color is underpowered. There is a reason it is cheaper. Putting honycomb on it won't change that fact.

Considering the components Apple is using, iPad 2 is not overpriced.
@WhoMan Have you used one? I have been using a Nook Color with honeycomb for 3 weeks and it is a smooth user experience. I am not trashing the iPad but you are just plain wrong.
@hoaxoner You know what, I'm REALLY curious about doing that. Have you been able to verify that a Nook can do a decent job running Honeycomb??

Apple convinced me the first time around.
CarlosViscarra 2nd Mar 2011
I was tired of having this super hot laptop on my lap when i would surf watching tv or have to lug around a laptop bag.

Then i picked up an iPad and it was a game changer.
The key board works amazingly well. I am typing on it now.
It is zippy and like any iOS device it's super easy to use.
I am a techy so i jail broke my iPhone to customize it more for quick launch features and mobile hot spot.
So with my wifi only iPad and jailbrokn iPhone I feel unstoppable. I have anything at my fingertips.
I can do Netflix on my iPad thru my iphone mobile hotspot.
When i recently moved apartments I had to wait weeks for cable. I used up 168 GB's of data thru my iPhone and didn't have any issues the entire time.

Now my iPad will be a hand-me-down to my kid sister in college to compliment her MacBook and iPhone. Besides, every college kid needs an iPad.

I will be buying the new iPad.

You sound like Apple just sent you
Will Farrell Updated - 2nd Mar 2011
@CarlosViscarra

We won't burden our kids with Apple products. We want them to be free thinkers, not drones like you and your kid sister.

But then someone needs to lead, others need to follow. I like the idea of my kids being those leaders.
@Will Farrell and how exactly Apple and its customers aren't leading the world? Do you even know what you are talking about? I don't know about your kids (I wish them the best) but you surely cannot even lead your personal life it seems let alone giving advice to others.

Wow Willy... Just WOW!

@Will Farrell
Because your kids are not allowed to think for themselves where Apple is concerned they will grow up to be leaders? How does limiting your children's choices and steering them to your own limited perspectives prepare them for leadership!?! Apple is a "choice" you may disagree with it but it is clearly a choice.

@Will Farrell

So how will you feel when your "free thinking" kid's run up a huge phone bill from premium text, sent by a "free" (pirated) application, they "free thinkingly" downloaded and installed from a 3rd party application repository they "free thinkingly" allowed?
@Will Farrell
Hahaha! I am getting a good laugh at how aloof you are, and what a distorted reality you have--placing such importance on a GADGET for crying out loud.

You REALLY BELIEVE that as long as you buy your children ANYTHING BUT APPLE, they will be the leaders of their generation.

Can you hear yourself?!?

Of course, as soon as I get a good guffaw out at your expense, I'm immediately tempered by feelings of sympathy for your children.
@rdaleypa

It wouldn't matter if the Nook was a goose that laid golden eggs; Carlos is just another Apple fanboy - his posts always reflect it.
I'm not convinced. Its still a tablet. You say you don't buy things because of it being Apple branded but your post says otherwise, especially the part where you say you won't deny your a bit of a mac lover and list a few Apple products. I do wonder how often you play to use that front facing camera. Same goes for anyone for that matter, I doubt people will use it that much. Just like that lil webcam on your laptop, its there but never gets used.
@Loverock Davidson
I agree but for those times when you want to read ZDNET before going to bed the iPad is the best device!!
@Hasam1991

Read ZDNet just before bed? Are you NUTS? I usually end up yelling at my screen 10 or 15 minutes into it after reading some of the total nonsense spewed forth from it's pages ...... Give me a good sci-fi book on my eReader instead .... G'nite all ....
@Loverock Davidson Wrong, he post does not say otherwise. If she had said she has had every version of the iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro and so on it would be another story. The fact that she has several Apple products just means she was happy enough with previous purchases to buy others. Doesn't matter how much you hope it to be so, just because somebody owns more than one Apple product doesn't make them a fanboy or girl.

I will agree on the front facing camera though.
