The iPhone 4 is set to finally drop in Canada this Friday, July 30. Canadians who don’t want to commit to a wireless provider will have the option to buy unlocked phones, and they’ll also learn the price of freedom.

The 16GB will sell for $659 CAD ($639 USD) and the 32GB variant is going for $779 ($755 USD). And if you still want to buy an iPhone 3GS, you can pick up an unlocked 8GB version for $549 CAD ($532 USD).

That will put a serious dent in anyone’s budget. Naturally, they’ll all be a lot cheaper with a multi-year contract. Still, if you really don’t like one particular carrier or don’t want to be locked in for a long period of time, maybe the price is worth paying.

The selling of unlocked iPhones already exists in other countries as well, but this can help make Americans even more jealous of their northern neighbors.

Absolutely right! And only 3 month later the total savings equal the amount paid ... and savings continue - every single month. No alternative to an unlocked iphone (factory or jailbroken - either way)

Ceridan 27th Jul 2010
779 + fed tax + prov tax ~ 1000...

A tad expensive... for that price I can buy a dumb phone and a laptop...
@Ceridan I don't know where in Canada you're writing from, but in Ontario HST is 13% which means that $779 is $880.27 after tax, not "~1000"

In fact, for the price to come up to "~1000", your tax rate would have to be around 28%. Last time I checked, there are no jurisdictions in Canada with a tax rate this high.

I have an official APPLE unlocked 3GS 32GB which I purchased at APPLE Store in SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA last July for $900 (US).

I'm on T-Mobile (unlimited, unlimited, unlimited)
$80.00/month
$80 x 24 months = $1920.00
$1920.00 + $900.00 = $2820.00

AT&T Plan (limited)
$130.00 x 24 months = $3120.00
$3120.00 + $299.00 = $3415.00

$3415.00 - $2820.00 = $595.00 (total savings)

The $600 savings is definitely worth it.

BTW, this should not be considered as a SPAM comment as I'm merely responding to the comment above that it's expensive to buy an unlocked iPhone.

It isn't when you consider on how much you would be spending here in the US if you're on an AT&T network vs other carriers.
