Verizon already sells out of Droid X online; next ship date pushed back

By | July 16, 2010, 2:06am PDT

Summary: The Droid X has proven to be as popular as the hype leading up the launch might have suggested. So popular in fact that Verizon Wireless has already sold out of the Motorola smartphone online and pushed the next shipping date back to July 23.

The Droid X has proven to be as popular as the hype leading up the launch might have suggested. So popular in fact that Verizon Wireless has already sold out of the Motorola smartphone online and pushed the next shipping date back to July 23.

Selling for $199 with the signing of a new two-year contract, it looks like anyone dying to get a Droid X immediately could still do so in stores at either Verizon or Best Buy. But there’s no instant $100 rebate there.

Did any of you try to buy the Droid X online and turn out to be unsuccessful? Will you wait until July 23 to get one online, or are seven days just too much to ask?

@TxM2xTx
I think you have it backwards... the reason our economy is in a downward spiral is that people live beyond their means (i.e., buying pricey phones, when a $200 cheaper phone would do... not to mention the extra $30 a month data plan for 2 years!).
So, just because large numbers of Americans are still buying expensive phones, doesn't mean that our economy is getting better. It just means that we're continuing the habits that got us here in the first place.

Update: I just ordered the X last night; they're saying it may take 2.5 weeks to get it. Hopefully it's before then though!
What bad economy ? If people still have the $$$ to scoop all phones !

I've been trying to buy a replacement phone for my aging Treo 700 from Verizon for FOUR months! First the Motorola Droid. But wait! no syncing of contacts from my computer (don't even tell me how I can upload all my contacts to the biggest data mining company on the planet!) but there is beta software available for $40. Then I get an offer for a private sale of the Droid Incredible for $99. But wait! We don't have any, we won't have any for a month, we will not honor the sale price later, and you can give is your money along with thousands of others and we'll get float/interest of it making it a sweet deal for us (I'm not sure that parts legal, as I think there is a federal law stating that if you take the money you have to ship in a certain amount of time). What's this? I get an e-mail yesterday at 9:11PM PDT saying "The Droid X has arrived". But wait! And wait! And Wait! I'm on a "new every two" that expired two years ago, but it doesn't matter.

For a place that sells phones and service for a business, someone needs to be fired in the supply management area.

Check the Plan Options Carefully

All cell phone companies, Verizon especially, will nickel and dime you to death - don't be a victim of cell phone bill shock. It's nice to have the latest smartphone - but watch out for their trickery and that $350.00 Verizon cancellation fee - ouch!
@jpr75_z Not with T-Mobile baby. I got two brand new phones back in December with no contract @ $200 each. I pay $70 per phone unlimited everything. I can exit any time I want, no fees.
@kckn4fun But what phones were they? Not all that great if they are a couple of base feature phones but if they are the latest in smartphones then it is a great deal.
"The Droid X has proven to be as popular as the hype leading up the launch might have suggested. So popular in fact that Verizon Wireless has already sold out of the Motorola smartphone online and pushed the next shipping date back to July 23."

So how many did they sell? The fact that it's out of stock is irrelevant if you don't know what stock was. Something tells me they didn't have 600,000 Droid Xs in stock.
Not interested, it's not worth it.... might have gone for the Incredible but it's never in stock and on constant backorder. I still do everything I need or want. Short supply seems to keep the masses hyped and ordering trying to get one but, really, what's the big deal? Yawn....

I got one.

It's a great phone and I am happy. I think two things are going on though. Verizon is sandbagging to generate hype. I think they have plenty of phones. Possibly they are backlogged on shipping but the phones are out there IMO. Second. They have so many verizon store outlets, Best Buy and Walmart locations to sell that every location only gets ten phones. I was number three in line yesterday morning and people started to stack up behind me. It also took 15 minutes for the 3G to provision my phone. I activate lots of VZW phones and it is usually instant so there was some activation load on the system for sure.

This is going to turn into another Android vs iphone bash thread. I can already tell. So let me say that verizon only sold a handful of phones. Apple is in no danger of losing market share. Just those few phones overloaded verizon and the phone already has all kinds of problems. Please buy an iphone instead to save yourself the headache.
@LarsDennert
It was you who first mentioned iPhones. Why you wanted to start that pointless yell-a-rama, I have no idea.

Let's see the turnout
Ktroje 16th Jul 2010
Considering this is the next in a long line of failed iPhone killers, let's see how it turns out, shall we? After three days, let's see if they can counter the 1.7 million iPhone 4s sold. (As of today, noted in Steve Jobs' keynote, there's been 3 million sold in 22 days. Definitely a slowdown, but it sold faster than the iPad - 3 million in 80 days)

Something tells me if they're on backorder for another week, supply was short, or demand isn't as high as anticipated. Aside from it's iPhone wannabe status, we'll see if this new Droid can put a placeholder in the market.
I got my Inc overnighted when I pre-ordered online. Want the best? Be fast.
@rickdlambert Yea, I was online at VZW on the stroke of Midnight. Of course it took the web guys about an hour to upate the freaking website. I had my phone ordered by 1am with the free overnight shipping option.

Now the REst fo the Story: FedEx took delivery of the package at 10am. 30 HOURS LATER FedEx finially ships the phone out of the Memphis warehouse. So my "Yet to arrive overnight package" has take FOUR Days. Wonderful

This looks like a great phone but how come it doesnt ship with 2.2 Froyo?

I thought that Google was pushing rapid updates, but it seems they are slow as molasses getting updates pushed out.
ordered mines on line on the day it debuted at 3:10 in the morning. still have not gotten by phone. waited almost a month for the incredible and decided to cancel order and order. someone should get fired for their inepitutude in having sufficient stock available.
Someone complained that the Driod X didn't ship with 2.2 Froyo. Perhaps Google and Verizon doesn't want to be like Apple and ship phones with issues like the iPhone 4.
@claude.miller Yeah, because we know there has never been an Android phone shipped that had some issue in the OS. PLEEAASEE, any and all phones/OSes will and do have issues here and there. Try growing up a bit and not taking the petty little pot shots.
