Verizon is finally taking pre-orders for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G

Summary: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G is lighter, slimmer, and designed to work on a faster network than the iPad 2. But at $530 for the 16 GB version, will consumers pay more for an Android tablet?

Those looking for Samsung's unltra-light and slim Honeycomb tablet for the 4G/LTE network need to be prepared to wait some more. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G is finally available for pre-order from Verizon now but it won't ship until four to six weeks later.

By all accounts, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is "a joy to use," according to my colleague James Kenderick over at the Mobile News blog. But as he points out in his review of the Wi-Fi model, the tablet does not include an external SD card reader slot like the iPad so choose the capacity of the device carefully. The 16 GB model with a 2-year contract with Verizon is $529.99 ($629.99 sans contract), or for a hundred dollars more the 32 GB model can be had for $629.99 with contract ($729.99 without).

While Sprint's 7" tablet the HTC Evo View 4G (WiMAX) is more reasonably priced at $399.99 for the 32 GB model and is compatible with the HTC Scribe stylus (also works with the HTC Flyer), it does ship with Gingerbread rather than Honeycomb like this Samsung slate.

If you have your heart set on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G or just prefer the Verizon LTE network, Verizon is accepting pre-orders on its website.

    Note: while there may be no announced external interface for sdcard support, there was an announcement of a USB host port interface, that will support usb memory sticks and usb based (self powered) hard drives and ssd drives. I would bet that a usb based memory card reader will work here as well. It is sad that samsung took the apple ipad route instead of the more traditional Android device route , of including a built in SD card reader. I just hope that the 4g can switch to 3g when there is no 4g signal available. Also, at these prices, I would expect for the wifi only unit prices to come down a bit, based upon these prices.

      @The_Omega_Man I don't think we'll see the Wi-Fi prices drop. After all, Samsung still sells a device whether you buy it through Verizon or not. Honestly, Verizon's data plans are a ripoff though. $50 a month for a 1 gig data cap? I hope you don't stream too much video.

      @Droid101: ... the difference so small that it only theoretical. Also, the fact that iPad 2 made of three times heaver material comparing to plastic (aluminium), and contains a lot of little but heavy magnets shows Apple's advance in the technology comparing to Samsung.<br><br>Also, Gloria forgets to report that SGT is slower by order of magnitude in vector floating point calculations, and three-four times slower in graphics than iPad 2 (no wonder, since the area that SGX 543MP2 occupies on the SoC A5 is as big as whole Tegra-2 SoC).<br><br> Gloria does not report that SGT does not have its screen layers glued together to fight parasitic refraction. Samsung has this technology only for smartphone-size screens (and calls then such displays with "Super Clear" prefix). And its PLS screen technology is yet to be tested to be confirmed as comparable to IPS that Apple uses.<br><br>And, finally, there are almost no tablet applications for Android yet, while there are over 90 000 for iPad.         I think it is SUPER AWESOME that you show up on every single Android tablet post to hammer home the same points over and over and over again and to make sure that people don't buy tablets from anyone other than Apple.

        If you had bothered to read the supplied link you would have found out it was Symantic that tested both iOS and Android and concluded in a twenty three page report that iOS, on the whole, was more secure. Apple Insider just reported the findings. Did the Android sites not do the same?

        Actually poorly written. She should have said "like the iPad, the tablet does not include an SD external card reader", not "the tablet does not include an external SD card reader slot like the iPad". She left room for interpretation...

  • Horrible company

    Verizon employees song Lin, bilal wahid listen in my calls for 2+ years, attack me, my friends, family, they are breaking the law everyday, they should be in jail a long time ago!!! Horrible horrible people at Verizon, I worked there for a very short time, they attacked my computer, my home, listen in my phone calls, it has been going on for a long time, for the safety of my friends and family, i will kill myself.

  • walmart.com price is $498 - so the verizon price will have to be much less

    since i'd have to buy into a 2 year contract for their data plan.
    if i could get it for around $250 plus the data plan contract or pay the full @$500, maybe.
    big maybe.

    You know, I considered getting a 4G version for a few hours. But the fact is Verizon has screwed me over in the past, I don't want their claws in my device, and purchasing unlimited 4G data with mobile hotspot through Sprint for my Nexus S 4G is cheaper than even the middle-of-the-road Big Red dataplan which caps at, I believe, 1 gig a month.
