Verizon won't carry the Samsung Galaxy S II, says WSJ

Summary: With Verizon nixing support for the Galaxy S II, how can Samsung expect to top the iPhone 5?

SHARE:

The Galaxy S II may be the most anticipated phone besides the iPhone 5, but that doesn't mean Verizon is on board to support it.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a version of Samsung's coming device won't appear on Verizon. That's a major contradiction of previous reports, which said that a version of the device would appear on all four of the major carriers.

The story does confirm, however, that a version of the phone will appear on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. So there's that.

But what happened with Verizon? The company isn't saying much, but is it possible that Verizon is concerned about the possibility of Galaxy S II sales eating into those of the upcoming iPhone?

But perhaps the bigger question is how Samsung intends to take on the iPhone 5 without the support of the U.S's largest wireless carrier. It certainly won't be easy.

  • Back room agreement with Apple:(

Purely despicable decision by Verizon. One of the many reasons I would never pay for their service.

Or maybe it is a early warning sign of what is to come from Android... Verizon is literally the top player and distributor of Android in the U.S. and if they're beginning to stop support or sales then that isn't good. I also hear there is a pseudo Galaxy S II they are testing right now that runs WP7.5 which may be what Verizon ends up carrying since it doesn't come with any lawsuits.

@audidiablo Verizon isn't subject to lawsuits, and with nearly 40% marketshare, users aren't slowing in their demand for Android devices.

I don't know how much of the delay is due to carrier as opposed to manufacturer, but the Galaxy SII has been out for about 6 months in Europe. I was drooling over the prospects of getting my hands on this, now I'm more or less regarding this as "yesterday's phone", and would you sign a 2 year contract on a phone that - while still great - is already behind the curve?
Got that Nexus Prime juuuuuust a month or two out...

I suspect that has a lot to do with it.

  • It couldn't be

That Verizon is just sitting out the legal storm surrounding Samsung's newest lineup?

Both Apple and RIM has been involved in several patent lawsuits lately, and Verizon hasn't stopped selling their devices.
And I'm not use I would call it a legal storm. Samsung was found to infringe on one patent, and it was in the gallery app. It's more like a slight legal breeze.

They might be holding out for Nexus Prime. According to rumors, it will be built by Samsung and premier on Verizon.

@Theli ...And/or possibly for the Droid Bionic.

  • Didn't like Verizon's smart phone choices... that's why I switched.

That, and their prices were higher.

Rumor is that Samsung couldn't fit LTE into the physical design of the Galaxy S II, and Samsung did not want to alter the design. Verizon, focusing on the deployment of their LTE, was not interested in releasing it as another high-end 3G phone, so they passed on it. It's my guess that it'll probably turn out to be another massive blunder by Verizon.

Pure speculation, but I'm just waiting for it to break, that Verizon is being fed financially by Apple not to carry it. Support Jobs all you want on his decision, but in reality, when CEO's step down during or prior to major lawsuits or litigation, it's typically to avoid being further involved in scandalous business practices. The 5hit has yet to hit the fan and I won't be buying from Apple, Samsung, or Verizon anytime soon. He11, I just through my phone out the car window yesterday, just because I'm sick of these mega-corporations being a bunch of whiny little beotches! 5uck it!

It could be that Verizon will carry the upcoming Nexus Prime phone by Google, which is made by Samsung and has the same type of screen only with a higher, HD resolution and supposedly, a dual core 1.5 gigahertz processor. The rumored Galaxy 2 Plus is said to share these same specs. That might be what they meant when they announced that all four US wireless carriers would carry a "variant" of the Galaxy 2.
