ViewSonic continues its 3D push with V3D231 3D LED monitor

By | October 17, 2011, 11:57am PDT

Summary: ViewSonic’s latest 3D monitor is the V3D231.

Consumer interest in 3D gaming may be tepid so far, but that isn’t preventing companies like ViewSonic from standing behind the technology.

ViewSonic’s latest effort is the V3D231, a 23-inch 3D LED monitor. Billed as the ideal monitor for both gaming and video, the V3D231 features a 1920×1080 resolution, integrated SRS Premium Sound speakers, and comes bundled with a pair of polarized 3D glasses. That last feature may be a deal-breaker for some potential 3D monitor owners, many of whom will probably balk at the idea of buying a monitor that requires the use of glasses.

ViewSonic is also bundling the monitor with the TriDef 3D software suite, which allows users to convert over 500 PC games into 3D.

The V3D231 sells for $349 and is shipping today.

3D is a gimmick at best. I wish they would stop trying to cram it down our throat.
@Aerowind

They were saying the same thing about windowing graphical interfaces 20 years ago. Once the technology becomes useable and affordable (that means no glasses, the existence of software that improves the user experience with the use of 3D, and little to no cost difference between 2D and 3D) folks will change their minds.
Passive 3D is he way to go and has proven to be the better of the two technologies for various reasons (cost is one because movies for the theater are designed using this method).

Another thing, these Passive screens are making 3D affordable for the masses and if they do the same for the movies, people will buy it!

@ Micheal Kelly,

Like Aerowind said, 3D is a gimmick and I'll tell you why. Go to a 3D movie at the theater and the first thing you will notice is you are totally immersed in the 3D experience because the size of the screen fills your peripheral vision side to side, top to bottom. Try to get that same total immersion on a 55 inch 3D television sitting the 8 to 10 feet from it recommended by the manufacturer. Not even close. I saw Avatar in 3D at the theater and it was enjoyable. I watched it again at home in 2D on my 47 inch flat screen in the living room with my surround sound system and enjoyed it just as much. Personally, I believe sound is more important to movie enjoyment than the visual. Before I purchased my flat screen, I had a 25 inch CRT in the living room. After purchasing my surround sound system, watching movies I had watched previously were 100% more enjoyable with the great sound and pounding base. So I say again, 3D on a TV is a gimmick unless one has a movie theater screen sized system and who can afford that? Same thing goes for a 23 inch computer monitor, cute, but no cigar.
I can't wait to get back into the latest first person shooters (in 3D !) on a decent sized monitor. I'm waiting for the technology to stabilize and the prices to come down, and I think most gamers are doing the same thing. The passive glasses will allow third parties to actually make glasses that are comfortable with a wide field of view since they are just polarizers. There just isn't any way to not have glasses unless the screen is small and close to your face...
technology for the past year, i've found that the 3D movies converted from IMAX stock are the best, followed by digital 3D, then converted 3D.
i think my Samsung converted Avatar extended blueray to 3D is just as good as the non-IMAX passive 3D.
the depth cues were there enough to make the movie more definitive even though the bezel prevents the images from coming all the way forward.
so, gimmick?, no.
still not perfect, yes.
but as we invest in the tech. the research and development will progress towards the pinnacle.
someday the promise of the star trek holodeck may actually exist.
but that will take investment in the incremental stages first.
let us choose our preferred flavor and support the move towards True 3D.

Dude it's a 3D monitor - not a TV - there are many uses for 3D on the computer besides games and movies - this looks like finally a nice high rez monitor without the annoying LCD shutter lenses
