Visa targets Amazon, PayPal with its own digital wallet

By | May 11, 2011, 9:25am PDT

Summary: Visa has finally announced its own entry into the simplified e-commerce field with a digital wallet of its own. With the move, Visa aims to position itself at the center of online transactions, rather than at the rear end of them.

Amazon and PayPal’s choke hold on the one-click payment space may soon loosen. Visa has finally announced its own entry into the simplified e-commerce field with a digital wallet of its own.

The offering’s main draw its its click-to-pay system, with streamlines the online buying process by asking the consumer to enter a username and password instead of a billing address and credit card number. The system will also allow users to store information on multiple accounts, including those that have nothing to do with Visa.

With the move, Visa aims to position itself at the center of online transactions, rather than at the rear end of them.

But what about mobile payment? That’s coming too, Visa says - just not in established markets. Instead, emerging markets like India and Russia will be the initial targets of the system. These are areas with a lot of credit card and cell phone owners, but not so many people who use their credit cards on a regular basis. But combining mobile and credit, Visa hopes to boost credit card usage in these areas.

Due this fall, Visas’ digital wallet will launch first in the U.S. and Canada, who will hopefully benefit from Visa’s foreign mobile payment efforts sometime after.

There are other payment system that offer cheaper transfers, but tend to be closed loop systems, like the ewallet program from chillipips, P2P transfers are a flat $1 but you get to link up to 8 bank accounts, do wire transfers in & out of the system, pay by cheque, linked debit cards, Mobile phone transfers etc.

They are linked to 138 banks in 240 countries.
Great for freelancers and small business that do regular transactions with clients.
One just has to find the system that works for you.

An Impressive move From Visa

I always had thought that the paypal should have a competition. They do a good job however at times I feel that they tend to charge more commission on transactions. However visa gadgets may be more expensive. Let us wait and see how thing would turn up.

Why do I not get a good feeling when a credit card issuer gets involved like this? I agree paypal should get competition, I just don't know if I want it from Visa, Mastercard, or any of the others.

Enron / eBay / PayPal / Donahoe: Dead Men Walking.
The thing is, will Ebay allow you to use it to pay for stuff?
They already stop people form using google check out and the like. Google does not sue for access since Ebay is one of their best customers.

They grudgingly allow businesses with their own credit card processing services, but most still use the paypal and a large proportion of their sellers do not have their own services since Ebay is just a part time thing, selling their old goods to pay off other bills as opposed to a garage sale.

Not realizing that in many cases the garage sale is a better outlet for almost anything under $20 since Ebay takes such a big chunk in fees and then if the paypal person has their visa take money back from Ebay, Ebay will take it from you, promise to "investigate" and then do nothing.

One thing that keeps me away from Visa and Mastercard (and others) is their tendency to revise T&C's including interest rate & penalties when THEY please, and in a unilateral sense. The customer is always wrong, and always taken for granted. Why else would US Congress have attempted to reign them in??? Also, I know of no Visa card currently offered by anyone except their puppet banks... So, how will the wallet work? Allow the puppet banks to add in their own fees and T&C's??? I just want to say NO THANKS as loudly as possible to be sure not only Visa but unaware consumers can hear and will begin to think about what they are doing! What's in MY wallet? Certainly NOT Capital One! "Rewards" are a cruel trick of the devil foisted on lazy, ignorant and too trusting consumers! They do nothing but increase my cost to purchase! PayPal could indeed stand some competition, but they have a multi-year head start in the area of online commerce, so in my book, competition is unlikely to catch up very easily!

Many Credit Unions issue Visa cards, and the best ones have very low rates and good service. In 20 years of using mine, I have only paide about $50 in charges, most of which have been in the last couple of years from buying software from Europe, paying currency exchange rates.
I wonder why VISA waited so long to introduce this ?

Very soon MC, Diner and AMEX will also do this.
