Will the PlayStation 4 come with Kinect-like controls? Hopefully not

Summary: A report says that Sony may follow Microsoft's lead and introduce controller-free gaming with the PlayStation 4. Is it a smart move?

If you watched even a few moments of Microsoft's press briefing at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, you would have likely gotten the sense that the company is going full steam ahead with the controller-free gaming of its Kinect peripheral. And you'd be right.

But could Sony be going a similar route? That may be the case according to a report from DigiTimes, which says that Sony's next console is set to go into production later this year. Set for a 2012 release, the PlayStation 4 will come with an interesting addition: Kinect-like controls. Or so say Sony's Taiwan-based component makers.

But how likely is the move? Considering that Sony latched onto motion controls not long after Nintendo's successful experiment with the Wii, copying the controller-free gaming approach wouldn't exactly be out of the ordinary. But will the gaming populous even care about motion gaming by that point? Judging by Nintendo's approach with the Wii U, I'd say its pretty clear that interest in motion gaming has waned somewhat. Sony may be wise not to follow Microsoft too closely on this one.

Sony would be wise to follow MS.

It is matter of execution. If sony can deliver smaller lags (time after move and before recognition by hardware), then Sony can win it. Also standalone controller that can be connected to PC would also add some extra weight to this idea.

Sony have most powerful console, so why not add best controllers, inputs, additions, etc.

There is also this little issue of MS having Xbox that is inferior to Sonys hwd, but with Kinekt Xbox can have bigger WoW! factor.

@przemoli The PS3 and 360 are about equal in hardware sprecs. Do your research! Anyways this will be about the PS4 and Xbox 720?

  • What?? That's an odd logic

You base this all on the fact that because Nintendo went another direction, it's because people aren't interested in it?
Is it possible that Nintendo's making a mistake as opposed to people not intereseted in motion control?

See the error in your logic?

Remember, Nintendo had misteps, too (Virtual Boy?) and look at Wii sales now - discounted pricing and large drop in sales.
and they're smart to follow up with a single touchscreen controller system the size of a small book?

I guess you could say that they never upgraded the Wii line because people weren't interested in better graphics, anymore.

If they where, Nintendo would have upgraded the graphics, right?

@Will Pharaoh It's not really a mistake either. The Wii U is still mainly using the Wii's controllers. The new LCD controller is in addition to those controllers, and only supports one per console.

  • Kinect and Wii

You noticed nobody threw any remotes into their Kinect yet. You have to wonder why?

    • Simple answer ...

@WebSiteManager 100% of today's Kinect games are dumb and stupid (please don't deny it .... dance games, pop the bubbles games, pet games and a few slow and lame shooters). They don't require that much power to play and don't really generate enough excitement to throw anything at anything.

The thing is, for Microsoft Kinnect isn't just a game controller, it's an outgrowth of work they've been doing on the PC side of things for years. So for MS, Kinnect isn't just a gaming periferal, it's a device they see being deployed in a huge variety of devices and capacities, powered (Hopefully) by MS's software.
