Workout while you work with this Elliptical Machine Office Desk, $8000

Summary: Why hit the gym before or after work, when you can burn 4,000 calories in a week while pedaling at your Elliptical Machine Office Desk?

Hitting the gym before or after work can be such a drag. You either push yourself too hard at the gym before work and end up spending the rest of day nursing new aches at the office, or mistake the bench press for a bed after a long day at your job. Why not workout while at work?

For $8000, you can have an elliptical machine built right into your office chair so you can put your legs to good use while sitting at your desk. According to Hammacher Schlemmer, the venerable gadget retailer in New York, the Elliptical Machine Office Desk is:

Designed to be pedaled at slower cadences that won't break one's concentration (or cause one to break a sweat), an average user can burn about 4,000 calories in a typical workweek.

Resistance on the elliptical machine is electronically controlled via the included performance monitor that tracks distance, watts, rpm, and calories burned, and displays information stored for up to 30 individuals on its 4" x 6" LED screen.

This set up also includes a "generously padded" seat that spins for easy entry and exit and an adjustable backrest, as well as the height adjustable desk that can rise from 27" to 47" at the press of a button, so you can say goodbye to "food coma-ing" after lunch.

My back can really bother me after sitting in front of a computer all day so this office-exercise machine hybrid is a good step in the right direction, but with the hefty price tag and unappealing design, I can't imagine anyone outfitting an entire office (or even a home office) with the Elliptical Machine Office Desk.

Let me know if you use one of these desks at work! How do you stay fit while working?

I've had one of these for the past 18 months (a LifeBalance Station) and it's a g*d sent! I use it at a low setting so I don't sweat (and I'm not a work out maniac by any stretch). I've lost some weight and, more importantly, I've toned up a lot. But the best thing is that I feel so much more productive cause I'm not a slouch all day any more!

Give me an adjustable standing desk! PLEASE!!! :)

I've often wished for this type of thing: An adjustable desk that I could sit for awhile or stand for awhile, as I please. The biggest mistake of the ergonomics police is that they are focused on finding the "right" position when the truth is we need to have multiple positions throughout the day. We are human; therefore we move! We should always be moving.

I have spent many hours on the elliptical machine and desk combination (known to me as The LifeBalance Station) doing all kinds of desk work: reading, writing, making phone calls and drawing silly pictures for my children. Whenever I am on the machine, I pedal at a comfortable (low) setting. I am never out of breath or sweat while I am on the machine. The machine is also very quiet. At the low setting, I burn a little over 100 calories an hour. I can work and pedal at the LifeBalance Station comfortably for several hours without any breaks. I can in fact focus on my work better and stay on the machine longer than on a regular desk chair because the machine chair supports my back better. I think that it is also because of the leg movements which seem to massage my lower back against the machine chair constantly (my theory only). So, I do not get as stiff as I would be sitting on a regular office chair. I absolutely love the machine!

@Multitasking Queen & @wellness traveller: I just looked up The Life Balance Machine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3Q14OxRKy0) and actually likes that design better than the one I wrote about. The mesh chair design looks more supportive and promotes better posture.

@tr7oy: I'm glad I'm not alone on wanting to stand while I work. Let's just say most office workers develop back problems not from any strenuous physical labor but from sitting incorrectly and for extended periods.

I perspire way to much for even the least work out at the office. I walk/jog 4 miles a day and can lose 2 - 3 Lbs of water with each work out. My coworkers would not appreciate the locker room odor.

... if you can walk slowly like when shopping in a store without losing 2 - 3 lbs of water then you can do this without sweating. This only raises your carido rate about 20% - 30%unlike an aerobic workout which can easily double your heart rate! .... the huge benefit with the LifeBalance Station happens because you do it for several hours every day....at a VERY low impact level....

Great idea, but the price tag is prohibitive. In my home office I built a pedestal for the desk and replaced the pneumatic cylinder on my office chair with a 10" model for drafting stools. Now, I can stand or sit and the desk height is just right. Total cost: Under $80.00

  • It does work! but...

These move while you work products are great. I use a FitDesk and it is only $200. I bought it on Amazon where it had great reviews. I am typing this while I have my morning coffee and ride my FitDesk. Since getting one I have not missed a day of exercise. Great idea who's time has come. Bye - Bye obesity!

I want my own Elliptical Machine Office Desk. That is so cool, working while exercising. It's very good for office people who lives a sedentary lifestyle and have high <a href="http://www.cholesterollevels.ca<br>">cholesterol levels</a>. People who also eat a lot of <a href="http://www.grilledporkchops.org">grilled pork chops</a>, chocolates, icecream and pizza would be happy to use this at work. What is most important is not to have a sexy body but the big <a href="http://www.coolpictures.ca">cool pictures</a> we have to see is to have a healthy body and live a healthy lifestyle.
