Xoom WiFi owners finally gifted with Android movies support

Summary: Xoom WiFi owners can now join in on the Android Movies fun. Rooted users, of course, need not apply.

Motorola is finally giving its Xoom WiFi owners the gift of Android Movie rentals.

The company confirmed via Twitter today that owners of the WiFi version of the tablet can now access and rent movies via the Android rental service, which Google announced in May. With the update, Xoom owners will see a "Movies" tab added to the tablet's Android Market app.

Sadly, the new feature isn't open to everyone. As with other devices, owners of rooted Xoom WiFi tablets won't be able to partake in the fun, as Google is actively blocking such users from accessing the service. That's the price you pay for gadget openness, it seems.

    Android = Meh... lol

    • But did not they say that Andoid is 'free'? Now, with less and less of ...

@Hasam1991: ... these "freedoms" left, what is the point of choosing Android? Practically, not very much (one might jailbreak iPhone perfectly legally and be as free as any Android). So what left is mostly religious preferences.

But... but... but... wasn't Android supposed to be OPEN? This sort of thing smacks of the walled garden paradigm that Apple uses - oh wait, jailbroken iPhones can rent and buy movies from iTunes so never mind.

WTH is up with Google? In all seriousness and despite my statement above this IS a move I would expect Apple to pull in their war against jailbreakers... not Google so much.

I don't think this will actively effect too many people. I myself have no interest in movie on-demand services. I think it has been a failure with most providers, Amazon, Blockbuster, Zune. If this was to announce Netflix and Hulu could not be used on rooted devices then there would be much more uproar. Most people root their devices in the first place just to remove bloatware installed by their carrier and to install apps that give functionality that Android should include anyways.

  • Obviously people don't understand

    how Android is open.

I can go to any site that has an Android file and... just install it. I can go in and change around just about everything. So what if I can't root? Who cares? Rooting is a waste anyway.

    • Explains why Android is filled with Trojans

@goff256 I guess Android users aren't really smart people if they go around graving Android files and "just installing it".

        Afraid so.

Freedom to download anything means people -will- download anything. And the foolish idea that a system is without flaws, any, is persistent with anything from *nix.

@goff256 Funny how the talking points change. When iPhone users used to talk about jail breaking their devices to get this feature or that all the haters said that didn't count. When it came to removing all the crapware all the Fandroids just said root it. Now who cares about rooting.

      • I only slightly care

And it isn't to remove crapware, since my Xoom came with none. There's this nice OC to 1.7 Ghz I was thinking about doing. Maybe.

Don't hate the iDevices, though. I think iOS does a very good job at providing an experience. As much as I love Android, controlling every aspect of the journey has helped Apple.

        No hate, merely explaining.

lol...at least they are getting the option. Users in Canada are stuck with the 3.0.1 v of honeycomb on Motorola Xoom!!! That was two versions ago now
