Android 2.2 (Froyo) features

By | April 24, 2010, 10:08am PDT

It sounds like a beta version of Android 2.2 (Froyo) is out in the wild for testing — and it has some interesting features that I’m sure Android users will find interesting. The new version of the operating system will be available on the Nexus One, and quite possibly Verizon phones in late May — my guess will be on the same day as Google I/O (May 19).

This version of Android will feature lots of bug fixes, as well as some great additions. The new features will include:

JIT Compiler
This is huge. With JIT enabled (Just-in-time compilation), applications will run a lot faster — like 3x faster. In addition to speed improvements, it has a positive effect on battery life. This feature is all but confirmed by the session list at Google I/O.

Automatic App Updates
For both application developers, and users, this feature will make a big difference. As a developer, you want your entire user base to be on the latest version of your software if possible — it gives you a tighter grip on the user experience, and makes supporting your software a bit easier.

As a user, it takes more effort than needed to keep your applications up to date. If you’ve got 50 great apps with lots of active development, you would spend a good portion of your day updating your software. Ok, that may be an exaggeration, but it’s definitely better to have the operating system do the heavy lifting if possible.

FM Radio
This one is cool. It’s one thing to have a giant collection of MP3s that you listen to on the way to work — but what if you wanted to hear the morning show, or your local community radio station for the latest in the local independent music scene? You would have to pull out your Walkman.

Well, it sounds like Google will be enabling FM radio in the latest version of Android.

New Linux kernel
New versions of things like this are good for several reasons — Security, stability, performance, etc. This latest version of the kernel actually uses less RAM — freeing it up for applications to use. This will have an all-around positive impact on your phone.

OpenGL improvements
Gaming graphics and performance should be improved with the update to OpenGL that is planned for Froyo.

Flash 10.1 Support
Apple has been ignoring flash like it doesn’t exist. Google is taking another approach, and giving users what they actually want here. People have been clamoring for Flash support on their mobile devices, and thanks to Froyo, they will have it.

Color Trackball
Well, it’s not exactly a feature that was needed, but Google will be enabling color on the trackball. I don’t know anybody that uses the trackball on their android device — but I think people may be looking at it the wrong way. It actually is useful — it serves as a great notifier for things. I use it all the time without even thinking about it — when it’s flashing, it means i have a work email waiting for me.

With color added, it can serve a multitude of different purposes, limited only to developers imaginations.

I’m really looking forward to the newest version of Android — so bring it on Google!

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! Nice article. I hope the feature list on your blog is 'confirmed' and is not based on the rumors floating on the net happy

However, you come across as a real fanboy contradicting yourself with the statements:

'Well, it?s not exactly a feature that was needed...'

and then;

'With color added, it can serve a multitude of different purposes, limited only to developers imaginations.'

Color trackball support is one of the BIGGEST requested hacks on XDA and it has it's own request post in the forums. You also need to hang around with the right people.

How about Bluetooth headset voice dialing!
Who cares about the color of the trackball when you can't use the phone in your car?

Seriously, Google, how could you overlook this when you've enabled voice
capability for practically every text field on the device?!

Wouldn't a colour trackball be a hardware thing, not possible by just an o/s upgrade? Some devices don't even have trackballs.

For the record, I do think a colour trackball could be useful. Flashing a different colour for a missed call from my wife vs. a missed call from a telemarketer would be great.

Well, given that Android 2.1 has been out for some time
now and many devices including my HTC Hero are still
waiting for an official update I'm not holding my breath
for this one.

Seems to be a specific Nexus One update instead than a Android update (ex: Radio FM is already enabled in HTC Legend)

Rumors and speculation
Ed Burnette 25th Apr 2010
Months before a new Android release comes out we start seeing a
lot of wild rumors and speculation like this. They usually turn out to
be one part truth and three parts wishful thinking. Unfortunately
people read it and believe it, then are disappointed when it doesn't
come to pass.

I'll be at Google I/O and will share what I know when I'm confident
it is based in fact. Until then, take the rumors with a large grain of
salt.

flash light
banned from zdnet again and again 25th Apr 2010
up until now, there is only flash lite available for
smartphones, which doesn't show most of the flash content
on the web, so it is useless. even if apple had wanted to put
flash on the iphone over the last 3 year, they coudn't. so how
did they ignore it when adobe was only whining and actually
couldn't deliver?

+ -
Because....
tk77 25th Apr 2010
.... Adobe does a good job of playing the poor innocent victim and
making Apple out to be the big mean bully. Most people don't actually
check the facts and go by what they read in press releases from Adobe,
and these "Blogs" where even more of the "Phone Game" is played.

You are correct. For the past 3 years Adobe has not had a REAL version
of flash for smart phones. In all these time they complain about Apple
and many take their (Adobe's) side, when in actuality there is NO flash
that will run most of the desktop flash apps. Even 10.1 is in beta and
has been delayed again.

Not just using less RAM...
uansari1 25th Apr 2010
... but the new kernel allows the system to use the full
512mb of RAM on the newer phones. With the current
kernel, only half is being utilized.

The biggest desired
Sodbuster41 26th Apr 2010
Is for Android to recognize sdcard storage as program and cache storage. Running up against the memory limit right away on my Droid, but the sdcard is virtually empty. People shouldn't have to run a series of hacks just so to get that to work.

I would rate this as a HIGH priority for Google to get out to users.

That is a wishful thinking
Rama.NET 28th Apr 2010
but there is no word on this yet. I am also hoping for that. As long as the
program doesn't run on SD Card, we can't see quality Apps that are
architected using multi-layer and tier for mobile.
