Android 3.0 could be what Google really needs

By | July 2, 2010, 11:57pm PDT

Besides the less-than-perfect market on Android devices, newish builds of the operating system seem to be fairly well received. Froyo has made improvements in speed, but the overall user experience hasn’t changed a whole lot since the early days.

That’s going to change. Gingerbread (Android 3.0), is a major release for a reason — The user experience is gong through a major overhaul. The new design is going to hopefully bring Android up to, and maybe past, the bar set by iPhone.

It turns out that Android 2.2 (Froyo) was competing fairly directly with the new iPhone 4 as far as timing goes. Given this, I believe Google did an amazing job in keeping their phone in the headlines — even though Froyo really wasn’t that big of a release.

What is interesting though is that Google will be uncontested when Android 3.0 hits the market in the Fall. No looming iOS update at the same time means that 100% of people will be focused on what Google’s got to offer. If the update is going to be as significant as I think it will be, Google is set for huge leap forward.

Uncontested?

I doubt that it will be as free a run as you think. Fall is the time that a new iPod touch will probably released; showing off it's new capabilities with iOS 4. Also fall will herald the release of iOS 4 for iPad, along with the possibility of new hardware; wouldn't put money on that though.

Another factor may be hp's release of its slate device with a new and improved WebOS. And last, but possibly, least will be the release of WP7 in Oct/Nov.

So it's looking as though fall will be a very busy time in the mobile sector. An uncontested run; I think not.

iPod and iPad aren't competitors are Android devices. you could make the argument about android tablets, but Google itself isn't interested in tablets at the moment.
The only thing that might take focus away is the launch of WP7 and Symbian^3 phones, not the iPod and iPad

"iPod and iPad aren't competitors are Android devices. you could make the argument about android tablets, but Google itself isn't interested in tablets at the moment."

I've got to disagree with that. It's all about devices running a particular OS, no matter what those devices are. Google needs Android on as many devices as possible to maximise advertising revenue; its only way of generating money from the platform.

As for Google not being interested in tablets; its partners are. Samsung is releasing an Android tablet in a few months and I'm sure they will be followed by many other manufacturers.

As I said above, it's all about advertising. So, if a device of any kind is running iOS and iAds, it's not running AdMob and Google has lost that space. So, yes, they're interested in any device that Android can run on. Their problem is they have to wait for someone else to make them.

And yes, I forgot to mention Nokia and Symbian in my list of other things to watch out for in fall.

@boxieblue Did I miss something or was this article about the OS, not a particular device running the OS? Since it's about the OS it most certainly does matter what else is release that pertains to other OSes in the same time frame.

I personally look forward to seeing what 3.0 has to offer. I am an iPhone owner and love it but also love the fact there is competition, it?s good for everyone. At this point Android has not been able to pull me away from iOS but maybe 3.0 can do it if they improve the UI enough. Granted I have not spent any time on something running 2.1 or higher but the little time I did spend on a phone using an older version I didn't think it was comparable.

Sorry, but you are talking and trolling around like the most common Apple fanboy/Android despising pedestrian around. I don't need to reiterate, because everyone else here except your iSlave, iFriends knows too. Gum's flapping doesn't mean logical and proactive thinking.

How did you interpret such bile from @A Grain of Salt's comment? I thought he put out a very sensible and level-headed opinion, one that I happen to only partially agree with, but still, it's not fanboy drivel.

I really wouldn't count out Microsoft's WP7. I don't know if it's going to be a "swing and a miss", but I do know that they are going to swing really hard. Android 3.0 won't be uncontested. Oh, and Microsoft has been known to connect with the ball and hit one out of the park on occasion.

WP7 is pretty much DOA
wackoae 3rd Jul 2010
WP7 is already way behind the curve and showing no sign that it can catchup.
- No Copy & Paste.
- No multi-tasks
- Very little number of (alleged) apps

I think that the Kin was a nice example of what is to come from MS Mobile. It was dead in less than 2 months.

Interesting list there!

But what does the 2007 iPhone have to do with anything?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

PS I actually don't disagree with you about WP7, I just think it is hilarious how you trot out that list over and over again when the truth is that iPhone 2007 was, and I quote, way behind the curve and showing no sign that it can catchup for the exact same reasons you listed above.

Cue the double standards...

@wackoae Interesting that WM6 (and even 5) had all that. I don't believe that list alone makes a success.

@NonZealot - what is interesting is that when iPhone came out without any of those it was the MS Shills who rallied to the lack of those features while people with iPhones didn't really notice the lack... and now those self-same shills are going gaga over the latest WM/WP OS which lacks those features...

Double Standards already cued by the MS Shills.

@athynz: Who is going gaga over WP7?
NonZealot 3rd Jul 2010
Please list all the people who are as fanatical about WP7 as people like banned, wackoe, and Pagan Jim are about iPhone.

There is no double standard here. In fact, most of the people who actually like WM6.X hate WP7 for exactly that list above. We feel that WP7 will suck for exactly the same reasons iPhones 1-3 sucked.

NonZealot finds the list funny
wackoae 3rd Jul 2010
@NonZealot But what the rest of us find hilarious is that you don't have the intelligence to understand your own words.

You ***** about the 2007 iPhone not having the features, but aren't unable to understand that we are in 2010 and that means that WP7 is 3 years behind everybody else in a market that evolves every few months.

Isn't is hilarious how incredibly stupid a fan can be without even knowing it??

@wackoae
Again, I'm not apologizing for WP7 so I find it hilarious how you think you can accuse me of doing that. I agree with you, WP7 is 3 years behind the iPhone... which was 7 years behind WM. happy
Spoken like a true disbeliever. I've been coding for the WP7 for six months now. The deve envrironement is awesome compared to Android, it runs XNA (which most games developed for XBox run), has Zune pass and the Zune Market (too many markets for Android is their bust). I recall in 1984 something called Windows 1.0 that all the Mac and Amega people laughed at. But you might not be old enough to recall history, thus you're doomed to repeat it.

The biggest problem is that the carriers are not updating the OS fast enough. In addition, inventory levels are simply too low. I decided to switch from my TMO - BB 4 to the new EVO 4G weeks ago. I'm still on the waiting list. Ridiculous.
@marvinsolano@...
The problem is, Android doesnt offer a consistent experience.

All the different makes, models, and OS versions...who knows which one to choose.

I do like my droid for data use and google maps is a great app, but as a phone, it is clunky and support for exchange is weak.

Sure it is better than WinMO but it is no iPhone killer.

+ -
@otaddy I saw that in FroYo Exchange support is expanded. The Droid (unlike my Samsung Moment) should be getting the upgrade soon.
@otaddy

And Google doesn't care, they make their money in ads and search. So the more Android phones that's out there, the more money they make. OEM's are giving free reign to do as they please, so long as they use the Google search as default, and other Google services.

I've been hearing Froyo will help fix this problem of inconsistency and fragmentation, but now I am hearing it will be 3.0?
@marvinsolano@...

Why are the updates left to carriers anyway? Imagine users having to wait for AT&T for their iOS iPhone updates.

Android may be made by Google, but each independent model has a different version of the OS that is tailored (kind of optimized) for the hardware is running.

Apple has full control of the hardware specs. Therefore, it is possible for them to control what an update contains. Google does not have that luxury .... and probably don't want to either.

I called up 3 Sprint stores, got on the waiting list for each and was called the very next day when a new shipment of HTC Evos came in. Find a store without a lot of foot traffic (avoid Malls). You can push yourself ahead of the curve is you try. (I live in L.A., so its not like this is Montana either)

This is counter to what I've been hearing leading up to Froyo's release, that it was going to be huge release that would help fix Android's fragmentation problem, and catch up to Apple etc. Now it sounds like iOS 4 is being blamed, and 3.0 will do what Froyo was supposed to do.

Untested releases
wackoae 3rd Jul 2010
One problem I see with the Android OS is that Google keeps releasing new versions pretty much once a month. What that means to me is that the code is released without any formal quality tests.

Software FQT of an OS is not something that can happen in days. It is a process that takes weeks at a minimum.

Agile development is not something you want in an embedded OS ..... because agile usually means "quick hack". Also, there are very few people skillful enough to actually be able to develop in an agile environment.

+ -
@wackoae I've gotta disagree there. There are plenty if people skilled enough to develop in an agile environment. All you really need arepeople that keep future proofinng at the front is their minds.

As for Google they have said they're slowing down after 3.0. I tuonk they needs this rapid pace to get our there and solidify themselves. Aka as they push more functionality into.individual apps they'll be able to enhance features without an OS release. If they get that right Apple will really need to make some changes to keep up.

And here I was told by those Android Army people that Froyo was much better than iOS 4 prior to the release of iOS 4... All we heard from them was that Froyo was the best, had all of these features, was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread... with all of that what could Gingerbread improve on since Froyo was supposed to be so perfect? /sarcasm

@athynz It certainly doesn't have to be perfect to beat iOS 4 as that is far from it. iOS plays catch up to 2.1 Eclaire and doesn't pull that off completely. If it has the built ability to stream your personal music collection from your house that alone is enough to blow iOS out Id the water.

Blackberry continues to dominate with it's OS5. And you guys keep talking about Apple and Google.

The BB phones are primarily for email junkies. The market is already way past that phase.

Unless RIM updates their OS, web browser, offers screens with a decent size and changes pretty much every aspect of the user experience, their business model will be going down the hill ..... wait .... it already is.

They still have a chance to stay in the run and probably have a couple of years of survivability. But they are already falling behind and are dangerously close to becoming obsolete.

@condelirios Phones are moving well past business uses now. It's almost like that stuff has become standardized and secondary almost like the actual phone function. These devices are focusing on entertainment and BB is faaaaaaaar behind.

@storm14k It is apparent that you haven't used one lately. The only missing piece is a better browser, and OS6 is webkit. Plus, blackberry continues to dominate in every demographic every quarter. A new Os with a better browser will only help.

@condelirios Android is the number 1 selling phone OS this year and it is on pace to put 62 million Android phones on the market in 2010 alone... At that point if RIM isn't #2 then it will be close but iPhone will be pretty far behind at that point.

Wrong about Android OS being #1
wackoae Updated - 5th Jul 2010
If you are going to count by the OS, the iPhone OS is outselling (not out-giving out for free) any OS in the embedded market by a HUGE margin. You keep forgetting that the iOS is in the iPhones, iTouch, iPad and iPod.

BTW: If you talk mobile OS only, Symbian outsells both Android and iOS combined. Android is no where near the #1 spot or even the 2nd or 3rd.
0 Votes
+ -
@condelirios Nokia are still top in the Smartphone stakes, and Apple are catching RIM in sales this year.

Personally I think BB's #2 spot is due to businesses buying masses of them, not because they are good phones but because they integrate well (I say well but not quite true if you've ever had to manage a BES) with Exchange. But I believe the iPhone also has this ability which could well see a shift towards the iPhone in the enterprise.

Another thing that I believe hurts the BB is apps. Apple have a much larger app range, and I'd stick my neck out and say even Android does too!

I love my HTC, and with contract renewal coming up in a couple of months I'll be looking to get my hands on a Nexus One from Vodafone UK with Froyo. I won't get a BB unless it's for work, and Apple can keep their "Magical & Revolutionary" devices.
Integration with the different phone builds out there to roll out Android 3.0 in very short term after it is announced will weigh heaviliy on it's measure of success.
I need one mobile phone, not a toy, something to tinker with or an experiment. Android 3 maybe the one.

Unification...
wright_is 5th Jul 2010
What Android really needs is a unification of versions.

What are Archos and Dell thinking, release new products with versions 1.5 and 1.6 respectively? Why aren't the devices at least running 2.1?

I think this fracturing of the market is more harmful to Android than anything else. It is one of the things that is holding me back.

I had Windows Mobile devices for many years and was always miffed, when Microsoft brought out a new version of their mobile OS and the only upgrade path was to buy a new product, no free upgrade, not even a paid-upgrade path, just throw away a perfectly usable device and buy a new one, if you want the new features (or you want it to work with your new computer - my Loox wouldn't work with Vista or 7, for example).

I got away from that with the iPhone, where new versions get rolled out automatically - although Apple have now discontinued support for the original iPhone with iOS4.

But Android seems to be falling back on those Microsoft ways, or at least the hardware suppliers seem to be, or others are just very slow at rolling out updated versions.

If I buy a new 'phone today, I'd want it to have Froyo pre-installed, not version 1.6 with a "maybe" hanging over it, as to whether it will get a 2.0, let alone a 2.2 update, and when are they likely to see 3.0? Never?

For all the banter, back-and-forth, Google is still having major issues breaking into the asian market with its brand of OS. Market share-wise, Symbian (Nokia) and iOSx (Apple) still have the mobile markets of other manufacturers beat. The US mobile market is minuscule, at best. The major focus for success is whomever gets India and China on board is the true victor of the mobile wars; And since (with the exception for north america) everywhere else is running on GSM wireless standard and predominantly Nokia has the likes of India and China using its phones (which have always been ahead of its time in OS design and hardware), I don't see much of this fan-boy whining for either OS going very far to compete on the global market. It's basically a matter of "big fish in little pond" vs "little fish in big pond" scenario. On a side note, Apple has the innovation that Google lacks since they've only come out with an OS that mimics the Apple OS. While on that same coin, Google has the portability of an OS that can go on many more platforms. Ultimately, neither has the goods that can truly compete globally until they can knock Nokia off the "gold medal" platform (which is not going to happen in our lifetime with the user base they've solidified in Asia, the easy of use and inexpensive nature to procure the hardware, and the versatility of the Symbian OS). But at least it's fun to watch the rat-race anyways.....

The Android 2.1 upgrade for HTC Hero & Samsung Moment (and others?) was horrible. So many things broke (e.g. BT, email, etc. - read the forums). Android needs to recover owner confidence by bringing out a solid product that simply does what it is supposed to do without a lot of hassles.
it's gong through an overhaul you say. well we're gong to have to wait and see.

I have a dream
oliver@... 6th Jul 2010
I am still using my IPhone 3GS, and it makes me all but happy.

I have paid some hundred dollars for the item and normally expect that an expensive device does what I want, inside technical limitations, of course.

Reality?

I am getting more and more tired of the limitations the IPhone imposes on me.

I had to download the new operating system without knowing what it does. Then, afterwards, I was requested to read an hour of legaleze text and submit to Apple's new terms and conditions. Otherwise I would have had no working phone any more.

Then: I wanted to download a free app. In order to do that I had to update my credit card information and add the security code to the existing information. Why do I have to give Apple credit card information when I want to download something free?

I have some music downloaded and paid. I wish to copy that on my PC, which is "authorized". All I see when I try that are grey "paste" dialogues and a mouse pointer with a "No" symbol.

And - by the way - how can one authorize a computer? You can only authorize people, as everybody knows.

My dream:

Please, Google, develop an Android version that runs on the IPhone. Call it Spartacus - he was the one to free slaves, and I feel very much like a slave.

Android is already way ahead of the curve - the release of Android 2.2 saw the integration of flash player 10.1 - that alone is the most significant upgrade to mobile phones since - well - ever.

What did the iPhone OS 4 introduce - um - video via wifi ?

Nokia N8 introduces Dolby, HDMI out, 12 mega pixel camera etc, etc - that is an upgrade, not to mention the N900's awesome - awesome - power.

I just feel incredibly sorry for Apple Fanbois - they are not simply behind the curve - they don't even know one exists.
Have you seen what happens when Flash is used on an Android phone??
