Googling Google

GDrive domain transferred to Google

By | October 28, 2006, 11:09am PDT

As you know, I like watching Google domain names.  Over the last couple days, Google has been the recipient of some interesting domain transfers.  Remember GDrive?  It is software currently being used by Googlers under the codename Platypus — giving them online storage for their files.

GDrive.us was transferred to Google on Thursday — I don't understand why they are snapping up so many of these domains unless it will be available to the public eventually.  They currently own Gdrive.com/org/biz/us/ca/co.uk/eu/de/jp and probably more.

Another interesting transfer on Wednesday was GoogleDashboard.com — it was previously registered to someone in New York.  The only thing I can imagine this domain representing is Google ramping up development for Apple's Dashboard on OSX — they already have a few dashboard widgets, maybe we will see more soon?

One reason might be thath there are a lot of rumors about Gdrive, and Google
doesn't want other companies to profit from them -- by building their own web
drive service and calling that Gdrive, for example.

Are you sure about gdrive.com? It hosts a Web site called `Web.com, websites
made simple'. They do have the Google AdSense logo on their site, calling it an
`industry-leading partner', but it doesn't look like it will host a web drive
service from Google in the future.

And probably GDrive isn't a good name anyway. It sounds too much like AOL's
Xdrive which offers the same service.

Gdrive.com doesn't sound right
simon9 30th Oct 2006
Instead of coming up with something called gdrive or gdrivebrowser? This doesn't specifically attract or draws enough attn. After all, more features are being introduced and with the buyout of youtube (internet vdo stream powerhouse) which is affiliated with CBS networks. A google network, somewhere along the lines of googlentwk.com or .tv - I presume this sounds much better.
