Google has published the description of a new feature to their "What's New" page for Google Apps admins. Your shared address book pulls together the complete list of accounts in your domain into an easily searchable list of contacts. The update isn't quite available for all the users in my domain yet, but I can enable contact sharing in my admin console already.

The Shared Address Book makes it even easier to get in touch with everyone in your organization without going to a separate list or company directory. When composing a new email, or sharing a document, you now have the option to search through all the users on your domain, even if they aren’t in your personal contact list. Need to send a note Paula S in Sales, but aren’t sure of her email address? As long as she has a Google Apps account on your organization's domain, all you have to do is type in the first few letters, "Pau … ", and your address book will help with the rest.

Unfortunately, it appears as though you cannot share email addresses outside your domain -- but most companies will agree that this feature is a great step forward.

This is one of the most significant things to come out of Google in a while. Get this: you can have your own private list of contacts, and well as having an enterprise list of contacts that everyone shares - and have those enterprise contacts centrally managed. (If I read this right) The cost to do this in the real work is significant - (Exchange, InterAction, etc) - and few get it right. I'm stoked Google is going this route. If only plaxo had enterprise features *sigh*

We've been waiting for this. I've been letting our user get use to the interface but now we can really move to it. We're using commercial Sendmail which will now become our gateway server both in and out. User can do as they please on their gmail accounts as I have all sent and received email on the Sendmail server. Perfect for compliance. Bravo!!

Users within my domain makeup the smallest subset of my contacts. It is deceitful that Google claims that they have shared address books or specifically shared contacts. I feel like Google is trying to throw us a bone by allowing us to share registered google user information within the domain. This may be seen as a positive step forward, but in my opinion this is just marketing hype for a service that should be fundamental. Without it, what would Google Apps be? GMAIL---period.

This is a terrible oversight and Google should really work it out. At least they should quit deceiving folks by saying they have shared contacts...they don't. They have shared user lists and this is a much much different thing.

    Yes, i agree with jaseinati.

what is the use of a shared address book if you cannot share outside contacts?

    Google is strange.

I really need to share certains groups from my Google Apps contact manager to other people inside my company.

That way my assistant is able to access my clients list for example.

For now we have to manually export our contacts each day so we can synchronize. And I'm looking for an external solution to manage contacts. Boring.

If you know how to forward that to Google, don't hesitate.

I need to share more than my internal contacts.
Something like google calendar , that you can have more than one calendar would be great. More than 1 address book and i chose waht to share.

I believe there should be a way that I could use these shared contact in a email client. That would be super,

i.e : Using any email client to configure my email and all the corporate contacts are pull down with it. Including distribution list etc.
