Google cracks down on slow gadgets

By | August 31, 2009, 8:58pm PDT

Google has seen success in large part because of their attention to speed, reliability and quality of their services. Loading up the Google homepage is usually instantaneous, and searching through their gigantic web index takes a fraction of a second.

Unfortunately for Google, they don’t have as much control over their own speed and user experience as they once did. The problem is that Google lets third party developers create applications (called Gadgets), which are often poorly programmed.

The solution: To pass out “badges” that identify slow gadgets — likely putting the brakes on people wanting to install them. Fast gadgets will continue to see business as usual, which Google hopes will be enough of an incentive for developers to create gadgets that meet their speed guidelines.

That's why they are called 'Gadgets'

Little tiny things that do something useful more quickly than the 'one thing that does everything' monster applications.

Make a little 'taster' package that is quick as hell and free with pointers off to your takes for ever application.

I'd also advise, if your name is on anything that takes forever to do something, you should probably change your name because no one will buy anything from you.

Some 'gadgets' are so complicated and do so much, that it is almost impossible to meet their 'speed guidelines' with them.

Whatever any readers think of Garrett Rogers' little tidbits concerning Google the response to this particular one just goes to show how ill educated, ignorant and ill mannered some people can be.
Garrett, your tidbits are always welcome to those who take their computing experience seriously and who appreciate staying a little ahead of what is going on.
Thanks Garrett.
As for Google Gadgets, they are cute for those who need entertaining, in some cases, and in others they prove to be very useful. Thus to write poor, or inefficient code gives them a real bad reputation.
The writers should be professional enough to get it right, first time and with the necessary speed so as to not impede the overall fast experience of the system. If you can't have concern for the user, then do something else with your time.
