If you have dabbled with Google Gears 0.1, you will be happy to know that Google just launched version 0.2 for developers.

One of the most important features in this release gives developers more control over the communication between domains — something that plain old javascript can’t quite handle for security reasons.

The Google Code blog explains the new features found in Google Gears 0.2

New Features

  • Cross-origin API support
  • WorkerPool improvements: Automatically report errors in workers, createWorkerFromUrl()
  • New Gears modules:

Javascript can do almost anything, that is why it is the source of so many web application vulnerabilities. Heck, there are whole OS'es based around Javascript! http://junix.da.ru/
we will need to add a sandboxed high level language running locally to enable the more complicated web applications for offline use. There is only so much you can do with Java Script.

Security Risk?

Javascript prevents connections to domains other than the domain that delivered the script, for a reason. Namely, XSS and CSRF attacks are bad enough as it is. If this kind of functionality becomes standard and wide-spead, we will have a whole new era of worms and security vulnerabilities centered around web applications.
