Google Reader gets a facelift

Google Reader gets a facelift

Summary: Google has changed the interface on Google Reader. It took a while for me to get used to the changes, but it was worth it -- the new layout is quite different, but it will likely appeal a larger group than the previous version.

After playing with the new layout, I am actually quite fond of it -- a lot of things make sense.  The one behaviour I don't get is the "Home" tab shown when you first log into the service -- I would much prefer seeing the "All items" in the "List view" format as the default.  Overall though, I am thinking Google Reader now has a much better chance of gaining traction.

Some new features include:

  • Expanded view and list view
  • Simplified sharing functionality
  • Improved read-state management
  • Infinite scrolling
  • Unread counts
  • Mark all as read
This update is very welcome, and I can even see myself using it even more than I do already (oh my!).  If only there was a "feeds" section in Gmail!
