Google Social Search: Now integrated with Google results

By | February 17, 2011, 10:57am PST

Summary: Does Google even need its own social network when it can just search and index the entire social web anyway?

Google announced today that it was no longer relegating its so-called “Social Search” results to the bottom of Google search pages where they had often been lost since the feature was introduced in 2009. The results from users’ social graphs, to use the Facebook term, will now be integrated with standard search results (including those displayed with Google Instant) based on their relevance to user queries.

According to a post on Google’s corporate blog,

First, social search results will now be mixed throughout your results based on their relevance (in the past they only appeared at the bottom). This means you’ll start seeing more from people like co-workers and friends, with annotations below the results they’ve shared or created. So if you’re thinking about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and your colleague Matt has written a blog post about his own experience, then we’ll bump up that post with a note and a picture [click the image to see it full-sized]:

This sort of result requires that “friends” either link their social media to their Google profiles or share media directly via the profiles (for example, via Google Buzz). However, social media shared publicly by your friends will also now appear in search results:

For example, if you’re looking for a video of President Obama on “The Daily Show” and your friend Nundu tweeted the video, that result might show up higher in your results and you’ll see a note with a picture of Nundu…

Perhaps the most useful enhancement to the social search results, though, comes through easier, more private linking of social media accounts with either your Google profile or your Google account:

You can still connect accounts publicly on your Google profile, but now we’ve added a new option to connect accounts privately in your Google Account. (After all, you may not want everyone to know you’re @spongebobsuperfan on Twitter.) In addition, if our algorithms find a public account that might be yours (for example, because the usernames are the same), we may invite you to connect your accounts right on the search results page and in your Google Account settings.

This is all well and good, but what’s the takeaway? Google has struggled to come up with any sort of reasonably competitive answer to Facebook. It hasn’t happened. Google’s strength, however, has always been search and managing the countless bits of data on the Web through complex algorithms. One has to ask, in fact, if Google even needs its own social platform if it can instead just index and make more useful all of the other social platforms that already exist.

Christopher Dawson

Christopher Dawson is the Vice President of Marketing for WizIQ, Inc., by day and a freelance writer and educational technology consultant by night. Well, most of his colleagues at WizIQ are based in India, so really he's working with them whenever he can stay awake. He has worked for his local school district as a teacher and technology director, for the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, and for Biogen, Inc. (now Biogen-IDEC, Inc.). He has also consulted with STATNet and Cytyc Corporation and retains close ties with X2 Development Corporation (now owned by Follett Software, the supplier of the student information system he administered for several years). Follett is paying him a monthly honorarium to act as a presenter for their "SIS Voices for Student Achievement" community (he produces occasional blog posts and hosts a monthly webinar on the use of student information systems to inform data-driven instruction and school-wide change. He regularly purchases and/or recommends Dell hardware. This is because Dell makes good hardware and has truly committed itself to education in innovative ways, particularly with their "Connected Classroom" initiative. It isn't because he has dealings with the company through his role at WizIQ (which he does) or because they have provided him with long-term loans of a variety of equipment for in-depth testing (which they have). Intel (reference designer for the Classmate PCs he has implemented in his local schools) has provided him with long-term loans of Classmate PCs for testing, as have Dell and Lenovo with their educational offerings. He may report on any of these companies as his experiences with them have direct bearing on educational technology; positive reports are not necessarily an endorsement and he receives no direct financial compensation from these companies or any others. Intel paid all expenses for his attendance at the 2009 Intel Classmate PC Ecosystem Summit which he attended as the sole representative of the technology press. He was invited to attend in 2010 but his wife would have killed him if he spent 3 days in Vegas geeking out and left her home alone with a new baby. Acer provided him with a 50% discount on an Aspire One netbook in early 2009 after he tested it for 30 days through their educational seed program. He liked the netbook at the time but it has since broken and sits unused in his office. Canonical sent him Ubuntu lanyards, t-shirts, and mousepads for his kids. He stole one of the lanyards and proudly hangs his keys from it and occasionally features his 8-year old wearing an oversized Ubuntu t-shirt on his Facebook profile. Gunnar Optiks sent him a pair of computer glasses to evaluate for a holiday gift guide. He is wearing them now as he types this because they never asked for them back and they rock out loud. Seriously - they work brilliantly and make it much easier to spend 20 hours a day staring at an LCD. If they ever asked for them back, he would fork over the $99 and buy a pair. Microsoft gave him 2 free copies of Office 2010 professional, a desktop clock, and a useless book on Office 2010 when he attended the launch of Office/Sharepoint 2010. He occasionally uses the SharePoint lanyard they gave him instead of the Ubuntu lanyard for his keys, but feels dirty afterwards. Adobe provided him with a pre-release version of the CS5 Master Collection for evaluation and ultimately provided a full, licensed copy for ongoing testing of educational applications of this admittedly expensive software. Like the Gunnars, if the license expires or they come out with CS6, he'd actually go out and buy it himself. Which is saying something, because he's actually pretty cheap. Any other companies wishing to send him cool things to evaluate, wear, or otherwise adorn his kids are more than welcome to; he promises to disclose it here if he keeps any of the stuff. Finally, because WizIQ is a virtual classroom and learning network provider, Chris, as VP of Marketing, frequently interacts with, seeks out deals with, and directly or indirectly competes with a whole lot of LMS, SIS, and other Education 2.0 companies. In general, he'll limit his reporting about these companies to news that does not impact his relationship with them or with WizIQ. If he reports on them, it's because what they are doing is newsworthy or worth the attention of his readers and not because he's trying to broker some deal, damage competition, or otherwise advance his position in his day job. LMS and SIS companies, along with other online learning communities, are a pretty important part of Ed Tech. If he stops reporting on them completely, there won't be a whole lot left. He'll be sure to call out any overt conflicts of interest if they are unavoidable. Finally, Follett Software Company pays him a little tiny honorarium every month to present on their SIS Voices webinars and to write the occasional blog or discussion thread for them. Since Follett recently bought X2 (maker of an awesome web-based SIS that Chris just happened to have used, served in advisory groups for, and frequently reported on), this is probably also worth disclosing.

Biography

Christopher Dawson

Christopher Dawson grew up in Seattle, back in the days of pre-antitrust Microsoft, coffeeshops owned by something other than Starbucks, and really loud, inarticulate music. He escaped to the right coast in the early 90's and received a degree in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University. While there, he began a career in health and educational information systems, with a focus on clinical trials and related statistical programming and database modeling. This focus led him to several positions at Johns Hopkins, a couple-year stint in private industry, teaching high school math and technology, and 2 years as the technology director for his local school district. Most recently, he started his own consulting business and is now the Vice President of Marketing for WizIQ, Inc., a virtual classroom and learning network provider. He lives with his wife, five kids (yes, 5), 2 dogs, and a hateful cat in a small town in north-central Massachusetts. Although he is no longer teaching, his roles with WizIQ and ZDNet allow him to continue helping students and teachers add value to education with technology rather than merely adding to the bottom line.

Is this another one of those features that one gets opted-into automatically, like Buzz? I use search for SEARCH. Frankly, I'm anti-"social", when it comes to the Web.

The last thing I want in my Google search results is something from Facebook or any of their ilk. I want relevant results, not social garbage.

  • Public unity and peace in the world
Greetings and Good Wishes to all People of the World,

Our website http://www.goldenduas.com is a social network site in accordance with the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles, 1971. It follows that our website ought to have been added in all the links of USA Government Websites, Commonwealth Countries in the interest of public peace, faith, security, health and wealth of mankind in the world. Besides the Commonwealth meetings like that held on 20th October 1991, other invitees like the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and other non-governmental Commonwealth Organization have to play their full part in these objectives, in a spirit of co-operation and mutual support.

In various parts of the Islamic countries, Christians are being killed and also Churches are burnt by the terrorists and this is against the Holy Quranic Verses 2:99, 5:82, 7:157 & 158 and also 22:40.(Quranic Verses in English are also available in www.quran.com).It is the bounden duty of the Commonwealth countries to take decisions in the interest of world peace and initiate co-operation with all other countries in the world.

According to the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles,1971 issued in Singapore, it is declared that Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary Associations of Independent sovereign states, each responsible for its own policies, consulting and co-operating in the common interests of their peoples and in the promotion of international understanding and world peace. Besides it is also declared that international peace and order are essential to the security and prosperity of mankind and it is also supports the United Nations and seeks to strengthen the influence for peace in the world, and its efforts to remove the causes of tension between nations.

Globalization is not possible without society, political stability and peace.

Further the Commonwealth declaration made on 08-12-2003 states that active participations of civil society must include women and youth and also strongly reaffirms its commitment to multilaration, international co-operation, partnership and productive working relationship between government and civil society organizations and accordingly we have established a social network under the name and style of http://www.goldenduas.com for the following reasons.

The People of the World are very much grateful to the Commonwealth Organization for its excellent service to the World. It is your bounden duty to review and do the needful to add/uplink our website http://www.goldenduas.com in your websites and its sponsored websites also in the World in the interest of public unity and peace and to avoid famine, floods, earthquake, bomb blast, extremist activities, unemployment problem, global economic meltdown, Tsunami, Law & Order problems, climate changes and also various kinds of diseases for the following reasons

The Islamic Governments and all other Islamic organizations in the world failed to notice that Christians are not arrogant and amongst them are priest and monks according to the Quranic verse 5: 82 .In the absence of reorganization of the above, there can be no peace between the 2 largest populations of the world. Once the Holy Quran recognized Christianity, then no Christian can criticize that Islamic community is false or that it is a satanic community. All the Muslims in the world are the followers of Our Prophets Jesus, Moses and Muhammad (peace be upon them). We have no other intention except to spread the messages to all the communities in the world posted in our website www.goldenduas.com to promote harmony, peace and security of mankind in the world. The question of converting Christians and all other communities in the world into Islam does not arise for the reason that the Holy Quran banned compulsory conversion as per Quranic verse 2:256. The Christians in the world are service minded people, who work towards peace, research, etc. to serve public in the world and as such no one should act against Christianity in the world. Please check our homepage www.goldenduas.com.

Please cooperate and add and advertise to all Youtube video as public unity and peace in the world, social networking, USA Government Web Sites, other internet, News Papers in USA, United Nations Websites, Commonwealth Websites and its back links, websites to allow all the communities in the world to visit and download from our website www.goldenduas.com.in the interest of public peace ,humanity , jobs, business, security ,health, education, climate change and wealth of mankind in the world and oblige.

    With Kind Regards,
