Google TV: How it could change things

In 2005, I wrote an article that talked about the possibility of Google creating a set-top box, and how it could change the game in a lot of ways. The same is true today — set-top boxes, for the most part, are really crappy and have a ton of room for improvement.

It sounds like Google is testing running an experiment with the Dish Network — they are testing a box, powered by Android, that makes it easy to search for shows and integrates web video content with live television content. Not only will Google technology make watching and finding content easier, it also puts Google in a great position to make their TV ads offering more valuable.

With strong partnerships with cable and satellite operators, Google could eventually make buying television ads as affordable, and contextual as web ads. Imagine logging into your Google account on your set-top box, and having relevant television commercials displayed during commercial break. It’s possible, and maybe even probable if you fast forward 3 to 5 years.

This is a natural Next Step for the giant as they further their dominance of Cloud based Services. They will become the premiere Contet/Apps Aggregator out of their massive fiber linked data centers delivering Docs/VoiceIP/VideoChat/Movies/Music etc.
The are as Mr. Carr says THE BIG SWITCH.

How about, I am paying for content, not adds!
No_Ax_to_Grind 12th Mar 2010
If I were getting my TV programming over free air I could see having it add supported, (worked for years) but when I'm chunking out $100+ a month for the content I don't want to see anyone's adds.

Makes sense but you are already paying $100/month to watch ads. CNN, Fox and all of the other channels already feed you a constant stream of commercials. Google is mearly talking about replacing the ads that you already receive with ones that are targeted directly at your interests.

I my DVR for exactly this reason, I skip right over all of the commercial crap. The thing that I fear is that Google will block the fast forward button during a commercial. That would be a deal breaker for me but there are a lot of mindless sheep out there.

Google could indeed change things. They have changed the economics of everything they touch. Google is about giving it away for free and driving customers to their ads. How will this transform the television industry? None of us know yet, but I fully expect this will be another big story. Jeff Kagan, industry analyst

Thirty five odd years ago, the cable industry promised commercial free television hard wired directly to everyone's TV. The cable industry also promised hundreds of channels of new and innovative programming. What the public got was maybe ninety channels of the same old crap, much of it reruns, with even more advertising than broadcast television. This was innovation???

What I see from Google is not the possibility of commercial free television, but the real opportunity of breaking the chains that the cable industry has us tied down with. The economic model of today's lifestyle has pretty much shattered the fantasy of commercial free ANYTHING! The REAL promise of a box that gets "Joe Blow's TV channel", or "Alice Smith's home economics channel", is what makes the concept of "cloud TV" so intriguing. The success of YouTube and it's like has proven that the cable model of force feeding us crap is dying.

You don't like Joe Blow, or Alice Smith? Your set is connected to the web. Soon it's only going to be your fault if you only watch crappy channels.

I have no idea who brought this discussion. Tell me. What is the difference between ant and elephant I will tell you? However, you simply cannot compare the ant with the money. Let me be clearer. TV gives me the news, movies, reports stories, plays. However when I want to hunt who dug up the grave of Pharaoh and why the middle light in the Taj Mahal is still magnetically stuck, I have to go to Google and search for this. I would be stupid if I start turning the TV up and down to look for the where the potatoes came first, my wife would take me to mental asylum or the TV station so she can make money after my show that makes all laugh.
