Niniane Wang, the person behind Google’s new service called Lively, has been working on this “confidential” project since November 2005 according to her resume. There have been hints throughout the years that this might be coming, but it turns out that the rumors were true — Google made Second Life.

11/2005 - present, Engineering Manager, confidential project

* Created vision for a confidential project. Got it chartered by execs.
* Built and led a team of engineers through technical design and implementation, in C++ and Java.

Granted, it’s not exactly the same, but it’s the foundation of a system that could easily go in that direction. This is a case, just like it was with Google Talk, that they are starting with a bare-bones service that will incorporate user suggestions over the next few years. This way the service is actually built without fat.

After playing with it or a while, I guarantee people will want to have the ability to create their own items, rooms, clothing, etc. in the short term — and I can see Google Sketchup being the official tool to make it happen. Right now, everything in the catalog you can “purchase” is completely free, but I can see a day when buying stuff will cost real money — making it a potential cash cow for people with an imagination. Unlike Second Life, I suspect the currency will be real dollars, not something that’s made up.

People have already started focusing their reviews of this new service on the negatives — like how it’s pretty slow, a bit clunky and the selection of things to purchase are a bit on the scarce side — but it’s not all bad.

The concept behind the service is neat. You can create a virtual chatroom that goes way beyond the traditional, and post it on any website. Your visitors can then actually interact with each other rather than just type. Like it or not, this service has a lot of potential if suggested features are implemented rapidly, and gets a reputation of being fun, and an interesting way to make money.

Even if it doesn’t become widely adopted, it’s great to know that Google is at least thinking about new ways to communicate with people.

You can also make "virtual" dates turn "real" with Google Orkut, sell your "virtual" products using Google Base, for Google Money using Google Checkout, and keep in touch with your virtual clients using Google Grand Central, and take the fastest route home using Google Traffic.

I can't wait until they come out with Google Sex so I can save money on dates.

As you said, Google's Lively is pretty much a version of Second Life but it'll be 10x more successful. It won't be based on features, but on Brand power.

"Google's brand in itself, represents a tool who is primarily accessible to any sex, race, class or age and most people use it daily. In turn, the same feelings will be passed with those who discover Lively. Suddenly we?ve got a 3D world who?s only barriers to entry are, ?do you have a browser & do you know who Google are??. "

There's now a 3D world now which anyone will feel comfortable entering into. Something Second Life can never get.

Ok., i really got fooled by this article when i read the summary atfirst, lol., i actually thought SL is a secret project of Google and Linden Lab is belong to Google..

And yes, i am a SL junkies too, lol..
Google's "secret project" also involves Google Finance, where you speculate "real money" in the "real" stock market, buy "real estate" in Second Life, and communicate in "real time" via Google Talk with other "players" (real people).

If Microsoft has their way, they will come out with another version of the same thing -- but only billionaires will be able to afford the price since it will be proprietary software developed by their programmers using 20 year old programming languages, and distributed through high-priced retail stores in expensive packaging, then they will want to install secret "security" features to ensure the Chinese do not clone their product and sell it for $9.99 at WalMart. Microsoft will require purchasers of their product to do daily authenticity verifications to ensure the product is not counterfeit, and the food served in the user's virtual kitchens is the same "sh@t" that Microsoft serves the purchasers of their current products if they try to reach customer service.

Google's product will make you "virtually" rich. Microsoft's product will make you "really" poor.
