Life in a Day crowdsourced documentary hits YouTube

By | October 31, 2011, 2:45pm PDT

Summary: Life in a Day, the Ridley Scott-produced documentary comprised of clips submitted by YouTube users the world over, is now available for free viewing.

Life in a Day, the experimental documentary that turned 4,500 hours of user-submitted footage from 192 countries into a 90-minute record of one single day on planet Earth (specifically July 24, 2010), has come home to YouTube for free viewing.

Director Kevin Macdonald and executive producer Ridley Scott, in charge of whittling down the submitted footage, have already taken Life in a Day on the road, with showings at the Sundance, Berlin, SXSW and Sydney film festivals, according to Google’s blog entry.

But now, Life in a Day is up for free viewing. And as befits its global origins, the film comes with subtitles in 25 languages. I can even embed it here for your viewing pleasure:

DVDs and more details on the Life in a Day project are available on the film’s official YouTube channel, for the interested. It’s definitely a neat demonstration of YouTube’s usefulness and potential as a video sharing platform.

So what do you think? Did you submit footage to Life in a Day? If so, did it make it into the finished product? Let us know in the comments below.
