Microsoft responds to new Google Instant feature

By | September 11, 2010, 10:18am PDT

Summary: Microsoft has officially responded to the new feature Google introduced last week. Microsoft has officially responded to the new feature Google introduced last week. It’s less of a “Yeah, we’re doing that too”, and more of a “We’re working on solving the same root problems”. This is a refreshing response — and shows that Bing’s primary goal isn’t to duplicate everything Google does, but to give people great solutions to real problems they are having.

“It’s great to see continued innovation in search, in particular the level of energy in this space over the last 12-15 months. From improving accuracy of results to speeding up time to complete tasks, there are a lot of opportunities to improve today’s search engine and we’re working hard to do so. When Bing and Google compete to improve search, consumers win.”

I do think, however, that if left too long, Google’s instant search is going to eventually become the norm (like it or not). Over time, the difference between Google and Bing will begin to feel like Google Maps and Map Quest did.

Google Instant is utterly crap. It takes up bandwidth and entirely useless. Why would I want Google to refresh everytime I type a word.

@day2die

if it lists a search term you are looking for, you can stop typing and select it. I assume it is intelligent and learns from your search history.

Also, with small, virtual keyboards (or lousy typists such as myself) it can be a significant help.

Edit: having looked at you post below, it has become apparent that I am wasting my time. There was no thought behind your post whatsoever, just mindless "fanboyism".

Why fanboyism? I agree with day2die. What connection do you have?

@day2die Having recently got into the issues around disaster recovery, I can see that triple-redundant, failover to full working site, topologies are the only safe ones.

If disaster strikes one site, having only one working site means a business becomes much more exposed. Many enterprises only have one-way failover, and often to lower capacity, leaving them partially cripled and with a long period of risk exposure as the failed site is reinstated mostly manually. friv oyunu

@day2die Just supported as long as the OS is supported. And considering that Microsoft kept selling XP on netbooks (because Vista wouldn't run on a netbook worth a damn) until the first half of this year, I don't think it is reasonable for owners to get screwed over a mere 6 months after buying a netbook. araba oyunlari friv

Bing FTW!
@Loverock Davidson

Bing!?! Bing!?!

That's a schtupid search engine name if I ever binging heard of one. Not only binging that, but I binging hate the binging backgrounds when I binging go to the binging search page. If I wanted a binging background I would set the binging desktop which I never binging see because I always have some binging applications open at binging work because I am binging doing my binging job. Much like many of those schtupid policies on binging screen savers. That isn't even the worst of it though. Every binging time I binging update my binging computer, I binging have to change my binging search engine defaults back to my binging preferred version of Google. Because when I binging search something on bing, I can't binging find it. Then, on top of binging that, Binging google tries to binging copy bing at every turn such as with their bing like version of their binging image search. I am a binging detailed oriented version who binging wants to know where the binging image originated from binging immediately and to binging have to binging dig up that binging information binging pisses me binging off. The only binging thing that bing is useful for is serving as a binging censor word for my binging rant.

So next time if you want to be cuil, go bing yourself!

@B.O.F.H.
Bing is always a step ahead (well at least in the US anyway). See how Google is always copying Bing? It's a sign.

Bing Map
Bing sidebar
Bing background
Bing Visual Search
Bing Image Infinity Scrolling

I am not saying that Bing never copied Google, but just saying that as of lately that's the trend.
@day2die You do realize Google Maps & Sidebar came before Bing's right?

Does "hoisted with your own petard" mean anything to you?

Probably not, but you can try to look it up.

ms lost the search war. they've lost numerous times, for about a decade now. the only difference is they don't play by the rules and will lose, according to ballmer, billions and billions of dollars to establish themselves in search.

they're buying their way into the market. i read about how people think apple is nothing but advertising. bull. apple can't hold a candle to what ms spends in advertising.
ms search, xbox, zune, msn... is nothing but losing obscene amounts of money while pumping more losing fortunes into advertising them.

ms has never made a nickel in their online pursuits, yet they were going to buy yahoo which actually has to run like a real business, profit and loss.

xbox lost enough frickin money to build another cern large hadron collider, another international space station before it saw it's first modest profit.
zune, never close to profit.

this ain't free market at work and it sure ain't fair competition. it's the yankees and red sox buying pennants.

when you don't have to worry about profit and loss, when you can lose disgusting amounts of money til the cash cows come home, you can pretty much ride roughshod over anyone.

ballmer: we may not be the first or the best but we just keep coming and coming and coming...

translation: we'll pump money into it until you die.

@sportmac

You gave me a couple of laughs.

On a more serious note, at some point you would think the shareholders would step in and say; "Give me the money, I can invest it much better than you can. Milk your existing profitable businesses for all it they are worth for as long as you can, give the profits to me, and let me re-invest."

If the shareholders do not assert their rights and protect their investments, management is free to squander it, which they often do.

Personally, I hate Google's Instant Search and have been using Bing more frequently (in fact, all the time). I'd rather have a picture than have the page refresh each time I type a character into the search box.
@linkinpark187
As I said before, I state here again. Instant Search is unhelpful... and may be annoying... Fully agree.
