New Google experiment

Google has been testing user interfaces for quite a while now according to their blog, and today Philipp Lenssen tells of a new look to the Google homepage that cleans things up a bit.  More screenshots of other layouts can be found on Keith's page.

Google has been testing user interfaces for quite a while now according to their blog, and today Philipp Lenssen tells of a new look to the Google homepage that cleans things up a bit.  More screenshots of other layouts can be found on Keith's page.

The "more" links on the main page are stuffed into a collapsable menu that says "More you can do with Google".  To me it seems like the improvements they are experimenting with would display better on smaller screens like phone's and handheld devices.

On a related note, I also find the SERP layout they are trying out (with the green bars on the left side) to display good in a smaller browser window.  The future of the web will be a mobile one, so it is important to keep this in mind when designing sites -- and I think that's what Google is doing.  Or, of course, they could be simply cleaning things up a bit.
