New version of the Google Talk client disables voicemail and more

talk_logo.gifSeveral people have noticed a new version of Google Talk (1.0.0.105) in the wild that is available to download from here. We’ve been waiting since January for a new version, and it’s unfortunate to see that when we finally get one, it removes several features that I thought were really great — including voicemail.

In previous versions of Google Talk, if someone tried to call and you didn’t pick up, the caller would be asked to record a mesage. That recording would then appear in the recipients Gmail as a voicemail message. I guess it would be fair to ask, how many people actually used the voicemail feature? I liked it, but I’ve personally never received a real message, or left one — maybe this is the rationale behind its removal?

Besides voicemail, it appears Google has also removed Orkut integration, and the “show what I’m listening to” feature.

It would be nice to see a new version of the Google Talk client which includes great new features — it’s been far too long since we’ve see anything new in this application. This version does have some minor updates though — David Hetfield from the Google Blogoscoped forums noticed the following:

  • Now, when you click the green phone icon, it opens a new window, and initiate a call.
  • After you’ve closed a chat window, and got back to it, the history will get a gray color.
  • After you hover a contact, you no longer get options for this contact, just a window showing the contact’s name, status, and email.

They probably removed the voicemail feature because of low usage, no sense in occupying server resources that could be better used elsewhere. On the other hand if people liked the feature but for whatever reason just didn't get that many voicemails and therefore feel that the statistics were skewed against them perhaps it'd be a good idea to send Google feedback that they really did like the feature and would appreciate its return...

Also no more file sharing which is for me very useful! Very strange from Google

Are you sure? we use Google Talk at work to share large files (video). I just added a coworker; she downloaded Google Talk today. When I chat with her--and only her--Send Files is available from the dropdown arrow.

I just tried 1.0.0.105, and file sharing is...gone! I've reverted to 1.0.0.104, which--thankfully--remains the download found at http://www.google.com/talk .
I will miss "Listening to" feature.
Perhaps they are preparing to transition
the voicemail into GrandCentral.
Awwww...we've become so spoilt with the abundance of cool, free software from Google. It's free; so we can't legitimately complain when they make it "worse" with time. I expect that they will charge for these "premium" features. happy It will give someone else a chance to provide the next uber cool IM/talk client.

Voicemail is cool

I used voicemail feature to record descriptive presentation and email to user directly. I used it to record my voice, convert into mp3 format, compress file and send through to email to user in one shot.

Earlier I used to carryout these all tasks separately and hence I liked voicemail feature so much.
I even left testimony for googletalk which appeared in google marketing website.

I will not upgrade to new version to make sure I do not lose that wonderful facility.
