Whoop dee doo...The Playstation phone will run Android

Whoop dee doo...The Playstation phone will run Android

Summary: Playstation phone? Yawn. Can it play Angry Birds?

TOPICS: Hardware, Mobility

I should be excited about this...The Playstation was (and is) a hugely successful gaming platform, Android is a great mobile and embedded OS upon which I've happily hung my hat, and I have gadget junkie kids who are getting to the age when a cell phone is de rigueur. It should be a match made in heaven, right? Adrian Kingsley-Hughes suggests that it might be the handset that "derails the iPhone juggernaut." Yet the only words that come to mind are those my late Aunt Ruth used to utter with an ironic roll of the eyes and a swirl of her finger: Whoop dee doo.

Why is it that Sony has had trouble selling its portable gaming devices? Because Playstation users value the intense and immersive gameplay associated with console Playstations. The Playstation 3 is a high-end media device, handling everything from BlueRay to Red Dead Redemption with aplomb. I'm not a gamer - I have neither the time nor the coordination to do more than challenge my kids at Mario Kart occasionally. But while plenty of games have found success on both the Android and iOS platforms, the serious games that have made the Playstation consoles so successful are a very poor fit for a mobile device. Whether that is a PSP or a Playstation Phone, this will absolutely not be an iPhone killer. It won't even be a big seller.

What sorts of games do people play on their phones? These are apps designed to pass idle time or add some value to an already useful converged device. Angry Birds is fun, but it's not the sort of thing you can play for 3 hours on a PlayStation. I downloaded Heavy Gunner, considered to be a fairly sophisticated game as phone apps go. My kids want nothing to do with it and I never touch it. We'd all rather use Pandora, play Antigen, and surf the Net. No, the Playstation phone, no matter what OS it runs, no matter what games it supports, and no matter how cool the custom Sony App Store that is alleged to be included with this rumored phone, will not even usurp the Droid X, let alone the iPhone.

I'm a gamer myself, and the prospect of a PlayStation Phone actually excites me. Why? Because as a core gamer, I can tell you that, with a few minor exceptions, you can't play real (that is, non-casual) video games on the iPhone, or for that matter, any device which has only a touchscreen. I love my Droid Incredible, but would never rely on it as a gaming device. And once I tried to download a demo of Mega Man 2 on my wife's iPod Touch, and it was unplayable, for one simple reason: I can't feel the buttons under my fingers. I need to be able to do that in order to play a game with any feeling of control. For the record, Mega Man 2 is a game I love, which I can play very well on the NES, Gamecube, PS2, and Wii, but which I struggle with on a touchscreen for the reasons listed above. I've been waiting for some phone manufacturer to make a phone with a slide-out controller to solve this conundrum. So until this PSPhone comes out, or until you can switch phones on your provider (which I won't be able to do for a while), if you want to play real games, get a DS or PSP (or pre-order a 3DS, I am!).

For the record, I have my doubts myself that a PSPhone could topple the iPhone as anything more than a gaming device. The iPhone is used for so much more than gaming. I have, however, always balked at anyone who has thought that the iPhone was a legitimate gaming contender (even Nintendo has said that recently, but I disagree).

@guardianmega I think we need some qualifiers in your statements. The iPhone *is* a legitimate gaming contender... for games that are designed for it's human interface methods. In other words, for games that make use of the gyroscopes or simple touch gestures (like... AngryBirds) for control... the iPhone is an excellent gaming platform.

But for games that require some type of joystick control, or even keyboard input, the iPhone in my opinion falls way short. The implementations of virtual joypads in iPhone games are incredibly frustrating. A joypad needs some sort of physical feedback to make them usable. You need to be able to use the pad by *feel*. Particularly in rapid-fire gaming. And that's something that an iPhone just can't provide.

The PSPhone would certainly have an advantage over the iPhone by offering, presumably, a physical joypad(s). Opening it up to the types of games that are tremendously frustrating to play on the iPhone (namely... FP shooters and scrollers). And since those tend to be the more popular types of games for the large target market of the young and upwardly mobile, I could see the PSPhone being more popular than the iPhone.
    • Sony Just Might Actually Do This!

@guardianmega After years of rumors, patents, chest pounding, kicking the father of Playstation out by the FAT Headed Imbecile Sir Howard Stringnutz, their once top rated R&D department being pummeled into oblivion by that cheap ignoramus, etc et all, maybe Sony with Ericcson's help will actually make gaming playable on a phone!

I personally lost faith when I lost my 3rd Playstation 3 due to an update purposely meant to kill the console off. Yeah...... Sir Stringnutz wants to save the music division (where he appointed equally dufus brother as CEO of BMG) over the Gaming to get back at Kutaragi for actually being successful at reviving Sony the last time they were down with Gaming!

This device would kick the gonads out of iPhone or iFad. But if they only put that Snapdragon chip in with the inferior GPU in it, it won't kick it them very far. They need to partner with Nvidia and Samsung and build a Beast. Put Nvidia's newest GPU in it and Samsung newest Dual Core 1.5 to 2.0ghz ARM chip in it, to kick everyone's arses forever more. Include Samsung's 6axis Gyro and accelerometer and Broadcom's newest combo radio with Bluetooth 4.0, Combo Band WiFi Direct with hardware DLNA to play full PS3 games streamed to your HDTV at 1080P!

Who cares about Angry Birds? It's an equivalent time-waster to millions of Flash games out there. Stop talking about it.
    • Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds.

@Droid101 Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds. Angry Birds.

I figured I'd descend to your level for a bit - I don't like it much. So you don't like Angry Birds? When WHY bother to comment on a post that mentions it and then tell the author not to mention it? And considering that is is the #1 selling mobile game there are quite a few people who care about it.
    • Agreed

      Angry Birds. Big whoop.

  • Sony is just a poor manufacturer

It won't kill an iphone but if it plays games and can actually make a call which new iphone can't do it may make money. the issue is the sony corp makes garbage. the ps3 lags behind the game play of the xbox 360 and costs a ton more and is even flawed with the ylod which is caused the same way the xbox RROD problem. The new psp go is just a giant failure its ugly games are no longer discs so cant swap friends and no direction thumb stick made it fail people still go buy the original psp style units.
  • RE: Whoop dee doo...The Playstation phone will run Android

Now why don't they port something that would be useful to the PS3 like Google TV!
  • RE: Whoop dee doo...The Playstation phone will run Android

I am a casual gamer. I have an XBox360 console and a Playstation 2 console. The idea is very ingenious. I love the idea of combining a portable gaming device with a smartphone. I just don't think the Xperia Play is the one. The R&D must have taken quite awhile to put its specs behind on the curve of the newer phones being released. From the GPU, processor, internal memory, and screen resolution, it will only grab those new to smartphones and the younger crowd. I hope it does well, though. If it does well, then it will pay for the R&D for a better version to come. If it had a dual core processor, better screen resolution, and more internal memory, I would seriously consider it. I am going for the Droid X2 for now though.
