Georgia hoping Wi-Fi will be tourist draw

By | September 15, 2006, 7:35pm PDT

Summary: State will add wireless access to welcome centers, in bid to beef up interest in state’s amenities.

Georgia will provide Wi-Fi connections at 11 welcome centers, in a tourism effort to improve Georgia’s status as a destination, the Macon Telegraph reports.

Dan Rowe, deputy commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, said Wi-Fi in the welcome centers was a logical step and should be popular with the ever-growing segment of people who travel with their laptop computers.

"It’s a technology that appeals to a connected world," he said.

The 11 welcome centers are located on interstates 95 and 75, where travelers enter Georgia. Thirty-six regional welcome centers, at interior locations, will also get wireless Internet eventually.

Travelers who want to use the free service will have to create an account with a username and a password. During that process they will be offered subscriptions to e-mail newsletters highlighting Georgia attractions, Rowe said.

Georgia’s Tourism Bureau thinks they can attract tourists like Britons who are interested in the Civil War, golf and shopping, three of Georgia’s main attributes.
