NASA scientists turn towards Earth to measure polar ice and climate change conditions

By | March 16, 2011, 6:48am PDT

Summary: This is actually some of the real science that’s been fueling the global warming and client change debates.

When most Americans think about NASA, they assume the agency is all about rockets and space exploration. While that’s certainly part of the NASA mission, NASA also does a considerable amount of Earth science, researching aspects of immediate importance to humans much closer to home.

Take, for example, the NASA IceBridge program. This is a program that’s been running since 2009 and has been investigating the relationship between arctic ice and sea level. This is actually some of the real science that’s been fueling the global warming and climate change debates.

NASA’s ice measurement programs have used both satellites and aircraft. Prior to 2009, NASA did ice analysis using the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat). ICESat operated in a near-polar orbit at about 372 miles up.

It provided data from 2003 until 2009, when it suddenly stopped operating and engineers weren’t able to remotely restart the measurement systems from the ground. Last summer, operators moved the satellite into a lower orbit and on August 30, it reentered Earth’s atmosphere.

To take ICESat’s place, NASA is planning to launch the ICESAT-2 bird, which was originally scheduled for launch in 2015 but has been pushed back to 2016.

In the meantime, the IceBridge program is using two aircraft — one flying low, the other flying high — to take ice depth measurements.

The first aircraft is a P-3B, a variation of the classic Lockheed P-3 Orion sea surveillance craft, used most notably for anti-submarine operations.

The P-3B will fly at lower altitude and use lasers to measure reflection from the ground back to the aircraft to gather data about how the surface elevation of the ice has changed.

Radar instruments, meanwhile, will look inside the ice, gathering measurement and ice characteristic data down to Earth’s bedrock level.

Finally, also onboard the P-3B will be a gravity instrument which will be able to evaluate data from floating ice and gather data about how much water is filling underwater spaces in the ice.

NASA scientists will also be aboard a King Air B-200 aircraft. This is a much smaller Beechcraft-built twin-turboprop, best known for use by the United States Army for gathering military intelligence at fairly high altitudes.

For IceBridge, the B-200 will fly much higher than the P-3B and will gather data from much larger regions of ice.

All told, the agency expects IceBridge missions to run for ten weeks now, evaluating arctic conditions. In October, NASA will launch another series of missions to evaluate the level of ice in Antarctica.

David Gewirtz

At various times during his adult life, David has voted for both Democrats and Republicans, and has been disappointed by both. He is deeply disturbed by how partisanship has come before patriotism in America, which gives him the freedom to pick on both sides.

David is a frequent guest on TV and radio stations across America and can usually be heard or seen on-the-air at least once a week. He writes weekly commentary and analysis for CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 and has been interviewed by Fox News, CNN, various ABC and NBC affiliates, and Canada’s Global TV. He has been a featured guest on National Public Radio and has also been featured on Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and Radio Liberty where his commentaries on technology, industry, and emerging nations have been broadcast into 46 countries (all in their own unique translations).

David is the executive director of U.S. Strategic Perspective Institute, a nonprofit research and policy organization. He is the Cyberterrorism Advisor for the International Association for Counterterrorism & Security Professionals, a columnist for The Journal of Counterterrorism and Homeland Security and a special contributor to Frontline Security Magazine. He is a member of the FBI’s InfraGard program, the security partnership between the FBI and industry. David is also a member of the U.S. Naval Institute and the National Defense Industrial Association, the leading defense industry association promoting national security.

David is an advisory board member for the Technical Communications and Management Certificate program at the University of California, Berkeley extension. He is also a member of the instructional faculty at the University of California, Berkeley extension.

David’s “day job” is as publisher and editor-in-chief of ZATZ publishing, an online publisher of technical magazines. Other than than his ownership stake in Component Enterprises, Inc. (the parent company of ZATZ), David has no additional industry investments.

ZATZ has many advertisers who do, in part, provide for David’s lush income and extravagant lifestyle. Most of them are IBM and Lotus aftermarket suppliers, some of them make goodies for Microsoft Outlook, and a few make all sorts of strange mobile devices and add-on products. David has been a regular judge of the IBM Awards, but has no formal financial interest in or with IBM.

Because the ZATZ online magazines often review products, David and ZATZ are sent an overwhelming stream of unsolicited, silly, and often useless products to review. Because they’re such a pain to track and ship back, these products often wind up in a dumpster or fill up the corner of a large closet. Although David has no plans to review products in connection to his ZDNet blog, if he does do a product review, he will disclose any relationship completely in that posting.

Both through ZATZ and independently, David derives a small income through various advertising and sales relationships with Amazon.com and Google. These are minor relationships and they will not impede his willingness or ability to chastise either company should they deserve it.

David has many other business relationships, but none of them relate to anything he covers in his ZDNet blog. David does have a bit of the sales-guy bug and if he’s not doing a sales deal with someone at least once a month, he goes through withdrawal. He has a number of consulting clients, but none of them relate to anything he covers for ZDNet (and if they ever do, he will either disclose that fact, or decline to write about them).

Back in the 1980s, David held the unusual title of “Godfather” at Apple. He has written and published 40 incredibly simplistic applications for Apple’s iPhone.

Although David is forbidden to disclose the terms of his iPhone developer agreement, he isn’t drinking the Apple Kool Aid, will never be confused with a metrosexual, and feels free to mock Apple, and Apple users, any time the occasion permits, on alternate Tuesdays, or if he’s bored.

We know co2 is building in the atmosphere the real question is "is it us?" there are at least 6 other times when the earth had a huge build up of CO2 in all 6 times there where no humans to blame. I am sure we are adding to the current build up but even with out us the earth is going to get warmer and colder and we can not do anything to stop it so quit wasting our money. If you will remember we had what was called the little ice age and we have no idea caused it, we have theories about what happened but no one knows what happened. Sun spots went away the earth tilted or it didn't how arrogant of man to think he has it all figured out.

With Democrats in control of Congress, it made sense for NASA to embrace the Global Warming agenda by co-opting NOAA's mission and grabbing the research funds for itself.

But now the Republicans want to know whatever happened to, you know, space exploration. Remember space exploration? NASA's mission? We have a dying Shuttle program, a dead Constellation program, nothing really amazing has been done since the 1960's, and the people responsible are chasing politically-correct research dollars that by rights ought to be going to our many Earthbound agencies that actually have the charter to work in this field.

NASA needs a good, swift kick.
@Robert Hahn
NASA's mission has always included things besides space exploration. You can't know the reality of climate change without actual research, can you?

@JimSatterfieldW I'm curious as to what in my note suggested to you that I was suggesting that no research be done. To my knowledge, there is nothing in my note suggesting any such thing. It's just that we have agencies dedicated to atmospherics, the weather, and so on. They don't do space exploration. Why does NASA need to do their job? My answer is: money. They are chasing money outside their charter, and ignoring their charter.

is so 1960s. Nobody, Republican or Democrat, wants to pony up the trillions of dollars space exploration costs. It's time to get our own planet in order before going traipsing about the universe screwing it up.

@Robert Hahn ... You know little of which you speak.
@Robert Hahn
There is no "global warming agenda" and there isn't a grand conspiracy for "grabbing the research funds." Maybe you don't give a damn about what happens with the Earth but I do, and NASA is in a position to gather additional hard hitting evidence of climate change and what it means for our uncertain future. If you want to erroneously and comfortably believe that all scientists, including NASA scientists, are in it for "the money" then you're out in the left of left field with the rest of the climate change evidence deniers.

We (NASA & other space agencies) study other planetary systems to get an idea of how those systems are similar to our own (think Venus, for instance) - both in the past and in the future - and then to properly apply that knowledge to what we see happening on Earth and what we think will happen. So for NASA to be involved with Earthly pursuits from time to time isn't out of line at all. If NASA's being involved with collecting additional evidence that supports the clear scientific evidence of AGW global warming, and it gets you hot under the collar, just save us the time and say so.
@Chiatzu You CARE? Then why are you here and not on some website screaming about the nuke plants blowing up. I know, radiation is nutritious but we have to worry about CO2 which is a life giving gas that plants just love. More plants, more food. More food, better earth.
National AERONAUTICAL and Space Administration. See that second word? In their charter, they are "To advance and communicate scientific knowledge and understanding of Earth, the Solar System, and the universe." That includes the Earth.

@waltsyd@... Aeronautical by definition is an ADJECTIVE
1. of aircraft: relating to aircraft or their flight. NASA's humble beginnings was all about flight of aircraft and their performance at near space altitudes and supersonic speeds or have you forgotten the X program?
This is more about the Democratic Agenda than anything else. The idea of a two class system, with the filthy rich, and the dirt poor. The idea of a global warming is a farce, this has been used to try and control the masses. Control through fear is a very powerful tool when used on the uneducated.

On a side note: David any other conspiracy theories you have? Like the ones contained in the Presidents book of secrets?
@Rick_K

In what way is this trying to control the masses?
@Michael Kelly
It is the same thing as using religion to control the masses. Fear of what might happen. If you don?t give up your car, and us public transportation, so the Democratic leaders are the only ones driving real cars. The so-called electric cars do not actually produce less emissions, they just shift where the emissions are coming from. Instead of coming from a tailpipe the emissions come from a smokestack. The idea of reducing the personal carbon footprint will be offset by the increase in corporate output. Companies can buy credits to emit excessive pollution. So the problem doesn?t go away, just specific people make more money on it.
  • Flagged
@Rick_K

I'm sorry but that doesn't fly. People are going to buy cars whether they are gas or electric. Corporations stand to make more money with gas cars because there is not as much R & D involved because they already exist.

And the Democrats want us off the roads so they can use them all to themselves? Come on, that is just preposterous. That's like saying Republicans want everybody to be Christians so they can be devil worshipers.
@Michael Kelly
You have to look beyond the surface to see the dark underpinnings.

It is like that wonderful Universal health care bill that got passed be the Democrats. If their Socialized Medicine plan was so good then why not enroll in it themselves? Here?s a clue for you, they think that they are better than you. Politicians do not care about the common people, just the rich that line their pockets. The difference is Democrats are better liars, they actually convinced somewhat they were looking out for them hill screwing them over.

>>>The idea of a global warming is a farce,

In what way is it a farce and how do you substantiate your assertion? Inquiring minds want to know.
With more & more enlightened people awakening to the "fact" that man-made global warming is a manufactured hoax, as was revealed through the leaked Climate Gate reports, now the global elite turns to NASA, as a tool to keep this big lie from dying out to the public's perception.

They're keeping it freshly invigorated with so-called latest sources from this well known "entity" or that one, only to push their Carbon Tax agenda aka, the UN's goal of (Sustainable Development) to destroy any remaining threat to their NWO and individual sovereignty & property rights will be a long lost liberty of the past.

CO2 isn't the cause, it's the ongoing solar activity, if anything is actually in reality, causing the earth to warm, although it's really getting cooler as the earth is tilting more on it's axis. This will be revealed in more detail, I can assure you that. I know what the coming plaques are and solar devastation is a real viable threat that's going to be witnessed within the decade, along with a catastrophic asteroid impact in the global oceanic region somewhere, perhaps the Pacific!
@BillyB40

Your hypothesis is really the only plausible one against man-made global warming (whereas others are just outright denial) and one I am willing to take into consideration.

However whether it is man made or whether it is part of a natural occurrence (either cyclical or "just one of those things"), is it not something that ought to be studied in either case? And isn't it something we ought to consider how to counteract, be it by trying to reverse it or slow it or by finding ways to cope with it?
@Michael Kelly
Exactly!
"However whether it is man made or whether it is part of a natural occurrence (either cyclical or "just one of those things"), is it not something that ought to be studied in either case?"

But this is what has been sought already by the recent conglomerate studies, and when the real, actual climate date was revealed, calculated over & over, it didn't support what was hoped for by the "elites" so they corrupted it, and then went on a campaign to attack & destroy the credibility of those scientists who either, exposed it for what is, or didn't go along with the rest of the bunch who agreed to cover up!

I want clean air and drinking water as much as the other side but what is appalling is the fact that this entire branch of science isn't yet capable of being projected to the public as it is revealed, without coercion and outright manipulation by the powers involved that want to use it as a force to implement a agenda that's clearly been revealed as a LIE!

person who paid no attention to what Climate-gate actually revealed. It ended in "gate", so it must have been horrible.
@jasonp@...
I didn't name it, but it is what it is. You can believe whatever it is you want to believe, just on a perceived "theory" as this is just what the whole global warming argument is.

If one would reflect back and research the actual recorded weather data & temps of by gone decades, one would clearly see it is actually getting cooler in most parts of the globe, not warmer. Truth is, there is just not enough statistical date mining methods to yet effectually gauge any meaning and direct results that can unequivocally point to "man-made" emissions as the root cause of any global warming phenomenon event.

Earth's weather is both historically & scientifically known and documented to be cyclically based in patterns, and what the global elite now have is manipulated science data to propagate a lie whereas the dumb public just accept it without question.

You can believe and inhale the "smoke" exhaled by this globalist agenda and when the solar activity starts to flare up and reign it's coming devastation on earth, just chalk it up to good ole CO2 emissions as usual and pay those draconian energy taxes reported from your "smart metered" appliances that report your daily consumption back to their global data banks so they can further glean from the minutest sources of the sheeple's master account!
@BillyB40

>>>just on a perceived "theory" as this is just what the whole global warming argument is.

In very large part if not entirely factually wrong. The argument is based on measurements over a 60 year period. There is no "theory" about it. The only cogent argument that can be made against the idea of global warming/rapid climate change, and a very weak argument it is, is that the sample(60 years)is to small to come to definitive conclusions.
If sea ice melts, then sea level will lower, but if continental ice melts, the sea level may rise, except that global warming might produce more evaporation.

Anyway, the earth has been warming ever since the peak of the last ice age, before which it had warmed before. We do have evidence of plant growth above the Artic Circle.

It really is all about money and control.

The study of earth and the atmosphere are part of NASA's scope. It is worth while to gather data about our own planet so that we can understand data from other planets.

A theory is based on observations and data. A mark of a good theory is that it can explain or predict accurately. Experiments like the ongoing IceBridge can add to the observations and data and can lead to a refinement of the current theory or to a new theory.

and it it does, it's only in the matter of getting satellites into orbit to facilitate the studies by other agencies which might be tasked with those "earthbound" studies.
wow, a global warming flame war going on here, jesus christ. I find it amusing that people against global warming give no creedence to what people are doing to the environment. Does the earth heat and cool over time naturally? yes absolutely. The issue here is how much of an impact human beings had on this since the dawn of the industrial age, when we started pumping countless tons of crap that wasn't supposed to be in the air in that volume all at once. The fact of the matter here is that both sides are neither right or wrong. Global warming isn't a human creation, we only sped it along a little. And damn what the hell is so bad about using less resources? Do you really need to have that styrofoam cup that freekin bad? Yuu absolutely must drive your fricken car to go 1 block away? Give me a break.
This article has seen more ****-roaches crawling out of the woodwork than anything else I've read here I think. Boy, talk about the gnorant masses!

others.

You're not clear about anything, and you are not making any sense in anything you've said.

You should always try to sound smarter than those you accuse of being crazy or stupid.

I will ask you what I usually ask the stupids:

So, you're failing to elaborate why others are the "stupids", and who specifically they were in the discussion or even elsewhere. By being so nebulous, you're the one not making any sense and sounding stupid.

can you support your assertion/conjecture/whatever.

Again, you're not being specific and you're not quoting any "assertions/conjecture/whatever" that I might have made. Before you can engage in a discussion, you have to engage on the points being made by the "others", and you, so far, have been very vague and nebulous.

As to my comment about the "crazies", that I can support and as for my hope, I stand by that as regards people who neither read nor believe stop signs, for instance.

You're being very incoherent and you come across as very stupid in your thought process. Learn a bit more about communications skills, and about using common sense, and about being detailed about whatever you want to "speak" about.

Meanwhile, you're just a nuisance and making unnecessary noise.
