126 apps for managing green and sustainability info

Did you know that there are now more than 65 software developers hawking at least 126 applications for environmental management, energy-efficiency tracking, carbon emissions tracking, sustainability planning and safety/health compliance?

There has been a boom in this software of software in the past two years; this year alone there have been at least 15 product launches.

This stuff is all tracked in a new guide from British research firm, Verdantix, which has just published the “Buyer’s Guide to Sustainable Business Software. I can’t tell if the firm does a ranking, because I’m not important enough to warrant my own copy — it costs roughly $460 (or 300 British pounds). But I have written here in GreenTech Pastures about many of the companies covered including 1E Software, CA, ENXSuite EnerNOC, Enviance, First Carbon Solutions, Hara, SAP, Tririga, Verdiem, Verisae, VillageGreen Global and ZeroFootprint. So this very definitely seems to be a good resource for those trying to figure out their options.

There are several themes explored that are worth noting for you as a potential manager of this software:

  1. It’s been bought by people outside your sphere of influence: 93 percent of the software firms considered in the report are selling to people with titles like vice president of sustainability or chief sustainability officer. Just 18 percent are selling into the IT organization.
  2. The dominant deployment model is software as a service (SaaS). This makes sense to me, given the rapid rate of change of for environmental regulations and sustainability compliance concerns.
  3. The emergence of the integrated platform. This is probably the most important thing worth noting. The simple fact is that SAP has already acquired two companies in this space, Clear Standards (carbon management) and Technidata (environmental compliance). It seems like it will only be a matter of time before consolidation will rule the day within the sustainability software segment. The report’s author, David Metcalfe, predicts: “Only a handful of today’s 65 vendors will survive the inevitable consolidation.”

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

  • Integrated platforms move customers beyond carbon measurement
    Heather,

I agree with you that it is only a matter of time before integrated platforms force a consolidation in the market for sustainability software.

I see two principal reasons for this:
First, organizations have started to move beyond measurement of GHG emissions and now look for software that provides a platform for the reduction of their environmental impact. One good example of this is New York City which is implementing TRIRIGA to reduce the environmental impact of its more than 4000 buildings. New York City plans to reduce its GHG emissions through a set of strategies such as preventive maintenance, capital improvements and space reduction. These strategies require complex analysis to determine investment priorities and comprehensive project delivery capabilities to streamline their implementation, both of which are well established capabilities found in enterprise-class platforms such as TRIRIGA, SAP and IBM.

Secondly, enterprise software providers that deliver these integrated platforms have secured large customer bases and deliver the core operational systems used by many users including those responsible for the reduction of their organization's impact.
