Boeing installs electric vehicle chargers in 4 states

Summary: Deployment was made at the request of the aircraft company's employees in the affected locations.

Aircraft and aerospace technology company Boeing has teamed up with Coulomb Technologies to make electric vehicle charging infrastructure at four campuses.

The locations getting the technology are Bellevue, Wash.; Portland, Ore.; El Segundo, Calif.; and Mesa, Ariz.

The program is being described as a pilot test of the technologies, which were being requested by employees in these locations. The Boeing Utilities Services & Conservation Group will take charge of running the test, using the ChargePoint cloud application for monitoring, so that usage can be tracked closely before a decision is made about broader, more formal deployments. The company worked with Charge Northwest, an electric vehicle technology consulting firm, to install the systems.

I wonder how they are dealing with providing a benefit to employee's that have electric cars (ie fuel) but aren't for employees with gas powered cars.

Boeing does give benefits to drivers with gas powered vehicles. They give out free bus passes, and they pay for vanpools. The amount they par for a vanpool or a bus pass for a month would be enough to buy my electricity for ALL of my driving for 2 to 3 months! Also, Boeing is installing ChargePoint chargers which gives them the option to charge for the electricity. At 10 cents/kWh, driving an electric car is about 10 times cheaper than driving a gas car, so electric car drivers won't mind paying the $5 or $10 a month for charging.

There is a slight difference between driving your own car and riding the bus or van pool, also I bet the electric car drivers are eligible for that benefit as well.. My point is, they are giving an extra benefit to select employees and I bet they get sued. Now if they give all employees 5-10 a month for fuel and that's all it costs for a electric charge per month then that would be fair benefits.

I just found out that the Boeing facility in Bellevue charges $1/hour to charge. That means that a Leaf owner is paying $1 for about $0.15 or $0.20 worth of electricity. Boeing has electricity, so why not allow them to sell it and make a profit?
