Car makers now LIKE higher emission standards?

Summary: So let's follow the money. The car-makers of the world are all hurting from Toyota to Chrysler.

So let's follow the money. The car-makers of the world are all hurting from Toyota to Chrysler. Sales are awful. The new emissions standards in the U.S. will be the toughest this country's ever seen. The new regs come with some pleasant promises for car makers: more government cash. And the car makers to re-allocate all those millions of dollars they felt compelled to spend lobbying and lawsuiting against the eco-socliast-faxcist governments in California and New York who wants to curtail auto emissions.

For non-bankrupt American automaker (Ford), the tighter emissions and promise of more government subsidies seeme to be positive stock news...May being its best month so far in 2009. Check out the summary of the 900-plus page draft of the global warming bill, named formally by its parents "The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009." Everythingin D.C. since 9-11 needs to be about security. Just like the freeway building in the 1950s and 60s was all about defense against that dreaded Soviet invasion.

"Section 124, Plug-In Electric Drive Vehicle Manufacturing: Authorizes the Secretary of Energy to provide financial assistance for retooling existing factories for the manufacture of electric vehicles. Authorizes the Secretary of Energy to provide financial assistance to help auto manufacturers purchase batteries for first production vehicles."

I've seen estimates of as much as fifty billion dollars going to auto compoanies to get them in line with the stringent fuel efficiency standards. And now even auto makers seemto have turned on their erstwhile allies at ExChevShellBP: I'm hearing auto talking heads talking about funding the continuied government bailouts by RAISING GAS TAXES in America. How times have changed. And the auto makers are expecting large government largesse to car buyers, big kick-backs for those of us buying electric or fuel-efficient cars.

So we Americans will get more efficient cars. We will curtail the amount of greenhouse gases our vehicles pour into the air. They now account for almost one-fifth of all our GHGs in America. We may even get a little more mass transit for city folk. We will NOT get any of this cheaply, nor painlessly. And the days of cafrefree, unlimited highway miles for many drivers may be coming to an end. The huge 10 MPG RVs may be parked next to the covered wagon and ox-cart at the local transport museum.

  • US Manufacturing is over

The USA is now officially an importer of everything. If it is not made in CHINA, assembled in CHINA, or have CHINA origins I don't think people would know how to react.

Just wait till the ripple effect the hundreds of thousands of jobs are gone from the auto-dealers being shutdown.

These jobs are history, it will drive the economy further down into oblivion with Obama raising taxes on electricity and gas.

In 2 years people will have had enough 'change' since they will be told what to drive, how much they can drive, how much electricity they can use, and what food they can eat.

    'Chains' or communist change.

    • Bummer

You?re just sad that your candidate lost. The simple truth of the matter is that it?s not this President, or any other, who is responsible for the collapse of your precious dependent lifestyle. The social and physical framework necessary to support all that ridiculous behavior was unsustainable and short sighted from the start.

China and India have those jobs, make those things, and sell them back to *YOU*. Your American company management made the decision to sell those jobs and their intellectual value overseas a long time ago. And you let ?em do it. You bought into their party line and remained complacent or even compliant because they told you that you might be able to someday sit with them in the lap of luxury. It?s was just the possibility of huge wealth, a narcissistic illusion, you and every other sad chump chose to believe.

And now your sad and scared and don?t know what to do other than to blame someone, anyone for your misfortune? Communism died years ago buddy, socialism isn?t being tried here, and you lack the vocabulary to describe the cluster event happening in its place.

      • re: bummer

No I did not vote for a socialist, my job is not overseas however the impact of the manufacturing will impact *YOU*.......

I am not sad, just amused at how the liberals are making a mess out of things. Jimmy Carter 2.0 all over again, it is really pathetic that people think Obamasiah is really going to give them freebies.

From what I can tell, he has caused more job loss in 3 months of his boon-doggle of giving away TRILLIONS of dollars with wild printing press frenzy and telling people they will get free healthcare.

Communism is alive and well, unlike you *OTHERS* can see it happening with the Government telling *YOU* what you will be doing.

Like Acorn, Pelosi, Obama and ther others will grind down in a few years due to lies, scandals and other shady activities.

        • Trying to explain something to you is like....

trying to explain to a child that he/she is childish. If you have the perspective of a child it is impossible to have the perspective of an adult. But then again, I don't expect you to get this concept either.

    • Government intervention: source of all evil

Ok, to be fair, not all, only 99%.

Just how destructive the big government is? When you try to start a business in US, both the federal and state government screw you w/ corporate tax, regulation fee, unions, minimum wages, environmental charge, welfare obligations ... you name it. The crap goes on and on and on. W/ that much overhead, you are forced to charge a lot on your products only to be beaten in the global market by some Asian company not having to deal w/ all that nonsense. To survive, you are forced to move your business overseas to escape the overhead. Then government jumps on you, "OMG!! You are such a selfish, greedy, unpatriotic business owner!! You are killing American jobs!! I'm gonna tax you to death to cover all the damage you produce!!"

Solution? Vote cancerous socialists out and extinguish them once for all!!

  • RE: Car makers now LIKE higher emission standards?

What do you expect GM and Chrysler to say? They are now partially owned by the US government which is pushing this new policy. Raising CAFE standards in the midst of bankruptcy is like a man who is bleeding to death from a gash in his side offering to give blood. This insidiuous creep toward government ownership of private enterprise allows government to enforce policies that make no sense in spite of the consequences. "Buy American" will soon no longer be possible with respect to automobiles (or any of the other enterprises which government is taking over) because government is driving them into the ground.

    • Its the Free Market baby

And its ultimately that free, unregulated market that avoids hard decisions because it can manipulate demand, inflate value, and build exceptionally large collections of personal wealth in pursuit of profit that landed these American companies in the hot water they?re in now. There?s no sense caterwauling over government involvement at this point, it was too late back when these companies started making SUVs the ubiquitous individual American transportation vehicle of choice. You know back when there were still incentives for unlimited consumptive behavior and tolerance for our national narcissism.

The CAF? standards should have been increased gradually to keep pace with the rest of the world. American car manufactures have stood in the way of this kind of change for decades and done everything they could to prevent any reduction in aggregate or individual transportation emissions. Change like this is painful because it?s so long in coming; we either think about and do something for our commonwealth or ride this ship to the bottom together. The life boats were sold nearly 20 years ago.

      • They won't get it

There are those who think that burning as much gas as you want is an inalienable right.

Everywhere else in the world where the oil is imported, they have realized that fossil fuels are a finite resource that must be conserved.

There is no need to use a Hummer H2 or a Ford Excursion (which weighs more than a military Humvee) as an everyday commuter vehicle for one person.

Some people use SUV's for actual work. However for the other 99.99999% of American SUV owner's, it's all about status and the on road intimidation factor to support one's aggressive driving habits.

        • So you say ....

I don't think you should be able to take 1 shower per day, other people in the world can't do that.

So I vote you take 3 showers a week and you do not use A/C because others do not have A/C.

Next up, meat I vote you can't eat meat a cow passed some gas so now we are in a climate crisis.

I vote you do not use your computer, others in the world do not have this luxury so why should you?

I think we need to live like peasants according to you since you dictate *WHAT* someone should drive???

Free country, if a person wants a Hummer WHAT does it matter to you???

Are you someone special who can tell others HOW to live, if so then I think you get paid to much money.

I vote your salary is lowered to someone in China you make to much money.

Also, living quarters you should not own a house, others do not own a house so you should live in a community quarters.

          Communism plain and simple.

There is no shortage of oil, it is all what the infamous Obama and his liberal cronies are enjoying right now.

Carter did the same thing, he had 1 term and he was the worst president in history.

I vote we ban all data centers they use to much electricity, why should someone be able to rent a server they should have a license.

On and on, double standards typical liberal dribble.......

          • How does a Hummer H2 affect you?

I would like to know, what is the fascination about someone owning a Hummer H2 or a truck.

So what, I bought it and I pay for it. Who cares, get over your eco-ego and move on with life.

Sorry but I don't see Al Gore giving up his mansions, limos' or jets flying all over the world telling people the earth is coming to an end.

Also, Obama turned the heat up in the White House because he 'liked it warm so he could roll up his sleeves'......

Double standards, like all liberals you scowl at someone driving a Suburban but take pleasure in the government paying for abortions with tax dollars.

No I got a full deck, I don't compromise for stupidity and something made up so it can be taxed.

Only sheeple follow an abortion monger and someone who is all about dismantling America.

          • It's envy mixed with self-righteousness

a poisonous combination that describes the mindset of the typical
liberal. He despises you because you have something he can't afford,
and/or he feels he has the moral right to tell you how to live because
he's just so much more righteous than you are.

      • What you just described

doesn't happen in a free market. But, of course, when all you read is
        Marx, you wouldn't know that.

SUVs became popular because that's what people want to drive. Like all
marxists, you are a wannabe self-righteous tyrant, feeling it is your
moral justification to tell other people how to live because you're just a
        better person than they are.

  • The truth

Auto makers suddenly "like" the new emission standards
because they are scared to death of Obama. Government
Motors had its CEO fired and a puppet installed by Obama.
Chrysler is now under state control in direct violation of the
5th amendment. These other car companies see the writing
on the wall. Cooperate or get nationalized.

The sad thing is, you probably think what's happening is good.

  • What emissions?

I read that the fuel mileage standards are going up - nothing about new emission standards.

Do you wonder what kind of truck you can buy in 7 years that gets 30 MPG? There are NO trucks or vans or SUVs today that make those kinds of numbers. Is it even POSSIBLE to make a truck that gets 30 MPG? Doesn't matter, the government says you have to!

OTOH, I do see cars that get 35MPG. They are small econoboxes that I wouldn't be caught dead in. My 6'4" 250lb body just doesn't fit in cars of that size. I bump my head getting in and out of a MkZ and Ford Fusion.

Once again, the government COULD have simplified things - but didn't. Why not just say that the corporate average fuel economy is XXX - and we don't care how you get there? This would allow auto manus to adjust their fleets the way they see fit - not how the government demanded.

I think GM and Chrysler (and Ford) KNOW that this is pie-in-sky thinking and that NOBODY could possibly meet those targets (in 7 years) - so they're just going along with it. The government is telling citizens what to drive - isn't that communism/socialism?

  • Enough tax and spend

Raising taxes puts more people out of work or in the poor house - who in turn do not pay taxes.

Global warming needs to stop being used as an excuse to raise taxes and allow teh federal government to cease control of private enterprise.

  • RE: Car makers now LIKE higher emission standards?

The higher emission standards are not going to put the brake pads to our slowly rising automotive industry. It would be for the best interest of the many if we were to have more fuel efficient cars.
