Climate Savers IDs best practices for network energy efficiency

Summary: While paper series provides best practices for reducing and managing power consumption of routers, switches and other network infrastructure.

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative working group that has been defining approaches to improve the energy efficiency of networking gear has released a new white paper outlining some of its early suggestions for best practices.

Issues including power supply selection as well as specific operational challenges associated with load fluctuations are explored in detail. The paper includes insights from Broadcom, Cisco, ECOS, Emerson Network Power, LikeOn, F5, Intel and Juniper Networks and is the first in a three part series that is described in more detail in the video below.

The speaker is George Goodman, executive director for Climate Savers. The next paper more explicitly focuses on power management considerations.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

Heather Clancy is an award-winning business journalist with a passion for green technology and corporate sustainability issues. Her articles have appeared in Entrepreneur, Fortune Small Business, The International Herald Tribune and The New York Times. In a past corporate life, Heather was editor of Computer Reseller News, where she was a featured speaker about everything from software as a service to IT security to mobile computing.
