In the early days of cyber-security, it used to frustrate me beyond measure when businesses would refuse to talk about their best practices. The rationale is that it would weaken their security. OK, I get that. But there's no reason that people doing great things in green IT shouldn't share their implementation secrets with others. Right?

If you're inclined to share, the Uptime Institute is soliciting applications for its 2011 Green Enterprise IT Awards. Winners will get a chance to present their case studies at the next Uptime Institute Symposium, being held in Santa Clara, Calif., from May 9 to May 12, 2011. For those of you who think what you are doing is too "small" to matter, the organization has introduced a new category called Innovation in a Smaller Data Center.

Here are all the categories:

  • Audacious Idea
  • Beyond the Data Center
  • Data Center Design
  • Innovation in a Smaller Data Center
  • Facilities Innovation
  • IT Innovation
  • Joint IT and Facilities Innovation
  • Outstanding Facilities Product in a User Deployment (this is a joint vendor and end-user award)
  • Outstanding IT Product in a User Deployment (this is a joint vendor and end-user award)
  • Outstanding Hosting, Colocation, Cloud or Managed Services

The deadline for applications is 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Feb. 18, 2011.
