Egads, get ready for 'Green Tuesday' holiday shopping

Summary: In the tradition of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, environmental organization Green American plans specials on "green" products starting the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

It isn't enough that we have Black Friday and Cyber Monday to stoke the retail economy. Now, a non-profit environmental group is advocating that the Tuesday after Thanksgiving be dedicated to "green" shopping activities. The group, Green America, is calling this proposed new shopping day, Green Tuesday.

But wait, there's more!

Of COURSE Green America is hoping to participate in this newly declared shopping holiday. Its Web site, GreenDeals.org, will therefore be featuring a week's worth of green product specials started on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011.

Examples of the stuff that will be offered include self-water systems for indoor and outdoor plants and annual memberships for car-sharing or bicycle-sharing clubs. You can even buy jewelry made from recycled nuclear bomb equipment! (Hmmm?)

There will be approximately 15 to 20 products and related coupons featured on a daily basis between Nov. 29 and Dec. 6. All of the businesses featured on the Web site are from local and national green businesses that have been approved by Green America.

Seriously, if you are genuinely interested in confining your holiday shopping to gifts that either could have a positive impact on the environment OR that might have less of a negative one, you might want to check out this gift guide.

  • And all shipping of these green products will occur via carrier pigeon.

Oh. Wait. It won't. They'll use gasoline-powered trucks.

    What about Occupy Wednesday?

  • Well, FedEx and UPS "green trucks" aren't carrier pigeons but getting close

Whether by green virtues or promise of more green backs, both UPS and FedEx are "greening" their delivery system slowly but surely. http://buswk.co/uoKc0D

Kudos for Green America - profit and Planet side by side!

This is just another infomercial piece of journalism. Who cares? It's about money, not the environment. I have a feeling Green American and Green Deals wants to be green with American dollars. Does Heather get a sales commission from Green Deals?

How does this advertisment qualify as journalism? No offense to Heather, and her ideals, but much of this is better suited for the area around an actual article. It's passable, but it'd be great to see her skills put to work with a bit more information or within an editorial. No disrespect meant, no harm done, and it was good to hear. Maybe just miscategorized?

EDIT: Nevermind. Good on Heather for caring.

As if any consumerism is ever green.
