More evidence that carbon footprint and energy management features are going to morph into traditional enterprise software applications: Epicor Software has added an extension to its enterprise resource planning (ERP) application called Epicor Carbon Connect.

The product is available on demand, as a service, and it is priced as part of the Extend application portfolio that can be added onto other Epicor products.

Carbon Connect's basic features allow businesses to identify, analyze, audit, track, manage, benchmark and report on their carbon emissions and energy consumption across their facilities. Epicor is pitching the software as a logical extension of operations and financial management -- and as a way for companies to conform with reporting and regulatory requirements.

If you will indulge me, one of my green-tech predictions for 2011 is that this whole category of software will undergo a major shake-up as companies begin viewing carbon emissions and energy consumption information as an extension to existing operational data. If you're considering an investment, there's a great report out from green IT analyst firm Verdantix that rates the top players in the category.
