San Francisco-based solar service provider SolarCity, which now has more than 10,000 projects either completed or under way, has reached into Maryland to extend its offerings. The company is teaming up with Clean Currents Solar, and will focus on serving Maryland and the District of Columbia.

SolarCity acts as an advocate for homeowners in the regions it serves, offering financing, design, installation, repair and energy efficiency services through relationships it establishes with local solar service providers. The company's SolarLease program lets a homeowner get solar onto their roof without having to pay upfront. That lease will be available in Maryland and Washington, D.C., by the middle of February.

Clean Currents, established in 2005, serves approximately 6,500 commercial and residential customers in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. As part of the new relationship, SolarCity will take a minority stake in the company. It has acquired the Clean Currents solar installation division outright.
