Home Depot to sell sub-$50 Cree LED downlights

By | August 18, 2010, 7:56am PDT

Summary: New lights designed to last 35,000 hours, priced at less than $50.

One of the better known forces in LED lighting technology is teaming up with retailer Home Depot to start selling six-inch LED downlights.

The EcoSmart LED Downlight uses Cree TrueWhite Technology, which means that they have been tweaked with an eye to the colors they cast in your house. The lights consume 10.5 watts of energy, which Cree says is about 85 percent less energy than required by a comparable incandescent light and about 50 percent less than a comparable fluorescent bulb. The lifespan for the new Cree bulb is 35,000 hours: translation, 32 years of life with approximately three hours of daily use. They are priced at less than $50. Cree says the lights will fit most standard recessed housing; they are dimmable to 5 percent, using off-the-shelf dimmers.

The EcoSmart LED Downlight can be purchased at the Home Depot Web site already. You will have to wait until the fall until the product becomes available in approximately 2,000 Home Depot retail stores.

Cree is a publicly held company based in Durham, N.C. The company just reported a 100 percent leap in LED sales for its fourth fiscal 2010 quarter, achieving sales of $240 million for that period.

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

Yes, the price is high, but it will come down over time.
It is these micro actions that will make the difference in per-capita energy consumption over the long haul.

This is good if you are looking for a dimmable solution, however I disgree with the "50% less power use than a comparable flourescent bulb". Whats comparable? I hope they dont mean CFL's, as I have a flood light that uses about 15w, so the 10.5w that this light is consuming is not signifigant at this time.

Follow the Lumins

@JT82
How many Lumins in each case?
It really makes no sense to tell us that your 10.5W fluorescent uses less power than the 10.5W LED downlight unless we know how much light each is making.

@JohnVoter Ok I just checked. The bulb in the article above puts out 650 lumens. My bulb which uses 5.5 (its actually 16w, not 15 like I thought) more watts, puts out 750 lumens. I think the trade off is worth the extra light.

Why would anyone buy this bulb when you can get the Home Depot Ecosmart LED 60 watt PAR30 made by Lighting Science Group that is 750 lumens, last 50,000 hours and cost $10 less?
I just bought two of these at Home Depot for $20 each! (Special promo as they introduce them, said the salesman.) They look great and were easy to install. I should go get some more!
