The smarter-everything people at IBM have released a new survey this morning suggesting that even though technologies are getting “smarter” in your house, office buildings are failing to take advantage of similar innovation.

The Smarter Buildings Survey covers canvassed close to 6,500 U.S. office workers in 16 different major cities. Only a third of those surveyed believed that their buildings were “somewhat high,” “very high” or “extremely high” when it comes to environmental responsibility. About two-thirds said they would be willing to participate in a building redesign, using technology, that would help make their place of work more environmentally responsible.

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

People must realize that businesses can't afford the new technology at this time. If they are to be able to maintain their present workforce then they must hold off on major purchases. Common sense says that companies have to balance their budget just like a family does. So would you rather have new cutting edge technology or employment. When times are better then the spending can take place.

Workers also stated that they would be willing to take a 20% cut in salary to help their employers make the upgrades. Employers, delighted with their sacrifice, decided to relocate to India so they could enjoy a workforce that would work for 80% less, but still keep the old antiquated buildings.
IBM and their "smarter" campaigning is simply their way of saying, look naive ones, we're building a total electronic surveillance capability into all your everyday mechanisms so you can live a much easier life & with much more "freedom"!!

    Not!
